From HISTORY OF THE MAUMEE RIVER BASIN by Charles Slocum 1905
John VOGT, postmaster of Deshler, was bom in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, May 1, 1853, the son of John H. and Catharine (BERG) VOGT, both parents being also natives of that country, the father of Prussia and the mother of Hesse-Darmstadt. The father came to the United States in 1854, settling in Toledo, OH, and in 1857 his family joined him, the family home being maintained in Toledo during the parents’ lives. The mother died in 1864 and the father in 1893. They had four children: Conrad, John, Amelia and Henry.
John VOGT was reared in Toledo and secured his education in the Lutheran parochial school and the Toledo Business College. He served a three year apprenticeship at the trade of file cutting, but did not follow it. In 1869 he came to Custar, Wood County, and worked in a sawmill and in 1871 he came to Deshler (then Alma) and, in partnership with his brother Conrad, engaged in merchandising in April, 1874. This partnership was dissolved by the death of Conrad on December 23, 1879, and John then conducted the business alone until 1895, when he sold it.
That year he was elected to the state legislature, and in 1897 was re-nominated, but met defeat with the rest of the Republican ticket. In April, 1898, he was appointed postmaster at Deshler and was reappointed in 1902, being the present incumbent of that position. He was one of the organizers of the Deshler Mail Box Company, manufacturers of mail boxes and cream separators, and has been president of the company from the beginning. He has served as township and corporation treasurer and as a member of the school board. In the Masonic order he has taken all of the York rite degrees and those of the Scottish rite up to and including the 32nd.
In October, 1879, Mr. VOGT was married to Miss Elizabeth CANNEN, who was bom in Richland County, OH, May 20, 1861, the daughter of John CANNEN, and to them have been bom two children, Bessie and Jenevera. Mr. VOGT takes a deep interest in the general welfare of the community where he is one of the leading citizens.
Nicholas BAUER, the son of John and Margaretta BAUER, was bom in Bavaria, Germany, on June 28, 1842. When he was 7 yrs. old, the family came to the U.S., bringing their six children, one of whom, the baby, died and was buried at sea. The family came to Henry Co., by way of Toledo and Independence, and on the way another baby came to take the place of the one just lost. In this county they secured a farm of 80 A., on which log buildings had been erected, and here the children were reared and attended school. The children were Erhart, Peter, John W., Conrad, Mary, Nicholas and Margaretta. John Bauer died in 1855 and his widow later married John A. SAUERMAN, both being now deceased.
On November 30, 1865, Nicholas BAUER married Miss Catherine SCHALL, daughter of Henry and Margaret (HORNUNG) SCHALL, she being a granddaughter of the founder of New Bavaria. The young couple made their home with Mother BAUER at the homestead, where she died in 1873 and they still occupy the place, having successfully conducted the farm for many years. Thirteen children have been bom to them, twelve of whom grew to maturity: Charles, of Pleasant Twp.; Peter and John, in Washington Twp.; Maggie (Mrs. KEMMER), of Flat Rock Twp.; Lizzie (Mrs. COOPER), of Pleasant Twp.; Henry, deceased; Mary (Mrs. BE A VERSON), of Fort Wayne; Emma, a milliner; Andrew, Martin, Amelia, Laura and Albert, who are still at home. In 1887 Mr. BAUER built his splendid residence. For 3 terms he has served as township supervisor, two terms as trustee, being now township director and director of the common schools. He belongs to the German Reformed church, of which he is a trustee and deacon.
