QUERIES

FREASE, WILLARD, VANHYNING
John H. Frease was featured in the article on Henry County bachelors ca. 1884 from the Signal. (Mar.-Apr. newsletter) Descendant Carole Lubbers, (#209) wrote to ask if there was a photo available since he was described as an “Adonis.” Anyone with information/pictures of him or other ancestors mentioned in this article–Win Frease, Charles Vanhyning and Capt. A. Willard–please contact Carole or the editor. Thanks!

NEW TO OUR COLLECTION

The following books have been added to our collection at the Edwin Wood Memorial Library, Deshler, OH: German Lutheran Schleuter family from Vethum and Hanover Province, Germany 1765-2002 and Andrew Genealogy – Revolutionary War Ancestors Adam Andrew, (&) Michael Weaver.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT COULDN’T GET ANY WORSE …
(from the Huron Co., OH newsletter via an internet friend)
From a Census Taker:
“I am a census taker for the city of baffalow. Our city has groan very fast in resent years and now in 1865 it has becum a hard and time cimsuing job to count all the peephill. There are not meny that can do this work as it is nesesarie to have a good ejehashum, which a lot of pursons still do not have. Another atribeart need for this job is a good spelling for meny of the peephill to be counted can hardly speak inglish, let alone spel there names!”

(And we wonder why we can’t find our ancestors’ names!)

The Gregorian calendar is the calendar in common use in the world today. It is a correction of the Julian calendar that had been in use since A.D 46. Leap years were miscalculated in the Julian calendar, so that by 1582 the calendar was ten days behind the solar year.
In 1582 Germany was a collection of small principalities, duchies, city-states, and feudal estates. The new calendar was officially adopted by the Catholic dioceses and states in Germany between 1582 and 1585, but many Protestant states did not accept the new calendar until the 1600s. As a result, there were two different dating systems used in various areas of Germany throughout this time period. In some cases, Catholic and Protestant congregations in the same city may have used different calendars at the same time.
The Gregorian calendar was finally accepted throughout Germany in 1700, when the Protestant commission adopted the new calendar. In that year, 18 February was followed by 1 March.

OLD PAPERS RECALL THE 80’s (from the Deshler Flag, 8 Feb 1940)

Life in Deshler 54 years ago is portrayed in two 1889 issues of the Flag brought to this office by L. L. BAUGHMAN recently. The papers, issued on January 4 and 18 of that year, carried a great deal of advertising, but only the names of two firms will be familiar to present day Deshlerites. One is A. A. SUBER’s foundry and machine shop, now, along with the Flag, Deshler’s oldest business establishment. Mr. Suber’s advertisement stressed “Horseshoeing and General Blacksmithing” and also boasted the “best spark arrester in use.”
The other firm was HOUSE and HEFFLINGER, in which Homer L. HOUSE, still a leading businessman of the city, was a partner. The firm advertised dry goods, boots, shoes, groceries and provisions. Patent medicine advertising was the country weekly’s backbone of support 50 years ago…. The editor’s chief complaint then was the state of the roads in and around Deshler. Says he, “To say that our roads are muddy would be flattery….” (H)e wants to know “Where is that trough that history tells us was to have been erected on the West Main street town pump?” [and there is a] dig at the village authorities for not keeping the street lamps lit….
There was, of course, no American Legion then, but the following officers were installed by the Sons of Veterans: captain, Frank ARMSTRONG; first lieutenant, Vincent ROWELL; second lieutenant, William RODERICK; chaplain, Dallas PIKE; first sergeant, Robert ARMSTRONG; Q. M. sergeant, Perry SCHNELL; color sergeant, Roy FREDERICK; sergeant of guard, Homer STEVENSON; principal musician, Albert BOSTON; corporal of guard, L. J. ROWELL.
Notice was taken that the material for a new printing plant had bee purchased for Holgate. Another paper was started at Bloomdale, known as the Derrick…. As to the Napoleon papers, the Flag noted that “ORWIG and MALLEY are pulling each other’s hair terribly. When will it ever end?” The Flag at that time was published by the man who founded it in 1876, W. B. MITCHELL, Theodore FISHER was editor. The office was located then at the corner [of] Main and Keyser (spelled then as Kaiser).
Note: Microfilm of The Deshler Flag is available from 1898 forward; no earlier copies remain.
