NOTES FROM THE DESHLER FLAG
11 Apr 1902 — HAMLER — the B & O has put on another section crew. Hamler will soon have as many railroad men as Deshler; Frank LaFountain, of Defiance, being the new section boss.
12 Oct 1906 — Toledo is to have a German daily paper, the first issue of which will appear about Nov. 1.
15 Oct 1897 — Mr. S. Cottingham, proprietor of the Deshler Ashery, will commence buying ashes from farmers and others at a rate of four and five cents per bushel. All you have to do is to save them in barrels or boxes, protected from the weather, and his team will call and take them away.
23 Mar 1906 — Married — Mr. Noah Butler and Miss Almeda Yoxtheimer of near Oakdale (Deshler) at the residence of Mr. Hiram Cole, by Rev. J. W. Hicks.
16 Jan 1941 Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Newell were pleased to receive a crate of oranges and a box of nuts and fruit from Mr. and Mrs. Guy Newell, of Camarillo, CA as a remembrance of their 30th wedding anniversary.
21 July 1899 Mr. John Flick lost his barn and a large quantity of hay last Friday by fire, the origin of which is supposed to have been a spark from Mr. Miles Yoxtheimer’s traction engine, which had passed along the road a few minutes earlier.
3 Dec 1931 –Knapp Meat Market has modern establishments in Holgate and Hamler, features the best in meats, groceries, vegetables, etc. and has a most extensive trade.
18 Nov 1926 (25 Years ago column) The Hayes Sisters at Hamler had rented the Shoemaker dwelling to be used as a dress-making shop. Both were expert fitters and seamstresses and good business for them was predicted. — From New Home: (southwest of Deshler) The corn shredder is again abroad in the land. William Nash is giving it a job now, and D. C. Miller and Frank Urban will follow suit.
8 Nov 1901 Officers elected by the Eastern Star lodge last Friday evening: Worthy Matron, Mrs. Rufus Hill; Worthy Patron, John Vogt; Conductress, Grace Armstrong; Ass’t Conductress, Mrs. Fred Stuve; Sec’y, Mrs. J. V. Vogt; Treasr, Mrs. Wheeler; Ada, Mrs W. S. Gehrett; Ruth, Mrs. O. L. Norris; Esther, Mrs. S. A. Jones; Martha, Mrs. T. M. Gehrett; Electra, Mrs. Sickles; Sentinel, Mrs. J. C. Armstrong; Warden, Rufus Hill.
11 Nov 1905 — HAMLER — Ferdinand Dudding is the strongest man in Henry County. He was seen wheeling 3000 locust posts home from the depot one day this week. Talk about your Samsons.
15 July 1904 Joe Fish, J. W. Dipman, and Fred Gilchrist left Monday for Bonesteel, S. D. to attend the opening of the government land at that place. It is possible they will stake a claim. — To say that Hamler is on a boom is putting it mild. Just think, three births in three days. First is Fred Samlow, proprietor of the Samlow Hotel, who has a boy born Saturday. Then comes Mr. and Mrs. William Rohrs with a bouncing baby girl born Sunday, and on Monday Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Marshall were presented with a fine boy. — We learn that Mr. Carl Miller and Miss Mae Wallen were made man and wife on last Thursday at Detroit. — County Line — Ben Boyer and Parle Cramer are coming to the front as cornetists. The boys are making rapid progress in their line of music and have added much to the Sunday School music at Oakdale.
20 Dec 1912 — HAMLER– Martin Fisher will soon have all the automobile companies beat a block. He is busy remodeling his Cadillac by making it a four door machine and giving it a painting.
3 Nov 1905 — HAMLER –Otto Stuve went to Lincoln, MI this week. He recently moved to that place to enter on a sheep ranch. — Harmon Gobrogge, Henry Meyer, and Willis Anderix were in Chicago this week. They say the Windy City beats even Holgate for business and busy bustle.
