NEW PUBLICATIONS
Ancestor Chart Book II and Obituaries from the Deshler Flag Vol. X, (1943-47) are now in print. The cost of both of these books is $10 plus $2 postage and handling.
We are sorry to note the death of one of our members, Betty J. Teague of Machiasport, Maine. She had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Carloyn Wasarzewski, Melvindale, MI. Memorials given in her memory which were received by the Henry County Genealogical Society amounted to $180. We extend our deepest sympathy and most sincere appreciation to her family.

SHAFER – PUTMAN
Della M. Shafer, Haysville KS 67060 has sent us a family history for John.Shafer m. Mary Putman. They were both born in PA and died in Allen Twp., Hancock Co., OH. Their children were: Sarah E. (m. Ephraim Trout), George (m. Margaret Carl), Gabriel (m. Anna Warner), boy, John Putman (m. Maria Smith), Elizabeth (m. Henry Clay Youngkin), William Samuel (m. Jane Shaw), Catherine (m. William C. Stewart), and Josiah (m. Margaret _____).
“Gabriel, born 1820 PA, died ??, married 10 Apr 1845 Anna Warner, dau. of Daniel & Mary (Hymer) Warner. The family lived in Henry Co. in the 1850 & 1860 census but Gabriel was gone by the 1870 census. Anna is buried by herself near her parents’ graves in Pleasant Hill Cemetery Hancock Co. but there is no trace of Gabriel’s grave. Since he disappeared between 1860 and 1870 we have speculated that he might have been killed in the Civil War, but have been unable to determine this as yet. Children: Daniel, Thomas C. and Charles.”
There is more info on Gabriel’s brothers and sisters and families. You may write to Mrs. Shafer, or to our corresponding secretary for a copy. Mrs. Shafer is seeking more info on Gabriel’s descendants.
THE EDITOR SAYS:
I WOULD LIKE TO STRESS that we only publish queries for our members and only queries that relate to Henry County. This is due to both space limitations and to the interests of our readers. All other queries wind up in the wastebasket, so save your postage. Also, some of our members submit basically the same query on the same surname over and over. To be fair to those who wish to submit new queries as we have space, we cannot print them. We welcome queries that meet our criteria.
We are also unable to devote space to printing photocopies of pictures for identification. They do not reproduce well when we copy your copies and almost all of us have dozens of unidentified photos. Since our current membership is over 80, it is impossible for us to offer this service, even if the photo is exceptionally good.lh

A REMEDY for musty odor from an old book is to put it in a brown paper bag, along with some cat litter, tie up the bag and store for about a week. The odor should be absorbed. Another method is to set the book in a cooler with a pan of vinegar. If you suspect an old book you have purchased may be infected with insects, place it in a microwave oven for 60 seconds on warm or low setting. The heat kills the insects and any eggs. Be sure there are no staples or metal paper clips among the pages.
