Editor’s Notes
I spent a most enjoyable day at the OGS Convention on April 25. So enjoyable in fact that it took me several hours that evening going through the material that I brought home with me. Lucille VanScoyoc and I met one of our out-of-state members, Michael Wahl, of Wallingford, PA. He joined us for lunch and we had a good time visiting. Was good to meet you, Michael. THE highlight for us that day was when Jana Broglin, presented us with our charter. So, members, we are now officially an OGS CHAPTER! Only a few short months ago we did not even exist, and I want to give Lucill VanScoyoc a big THANK YOU for all she did in getting us started. CONGRATULATIONS go to Jana Broglin, vice president of our district for OGS and State Education Chairman for 1987. She received the Jane Roush McGafferty Award of Excellence. Good going Jana!
From Our President
Early in 1987 the Wood County Chapter of OGS donated 20 copies of “An Oral History of McClure Ohio for us to sell. We gladly accepted them but this presented two problems for the Society. First we would need to obtain a vendors license, and second we would need to apply for federal tax-exempt status. In March we bought a vendor’s license from the Henry Co. Auditor. We also sent for forms to file an application for tax exemption. We are presently having the application worked on but it will take several months for it to be processed through the proper federal government channels. When we do receive our exemption it will enable us to buy supplies without paying state sales tax. It will also allow friends of HCGS to make charitable contributions and deduct the amount on their federal income tax. Our Society has 53 members and we are still growing.

QUESTION
How do I begin my own genealogy?
ANSWER
Always proceed from the present to the past. Begin with your immediate family. Record your full name, place and date of birth, residence and if married, place and date. Do the same for your children.
Search and record the same information about your parents and grandparents. Do this for as many generations as possible. Some people are satisfied with completing a five-generation chart, while others have information dating back 600 or 700 years. Most genealogists are only concerned with keeping direct descent records; however, many others also keep sibling files, cousin files and names of obscure relatives. Some genealogists also record any information about people with their surnames in hopes of someday making a connection.
Start gathering your information by interviewing older family members. Check your own books and family mementoes for pertinent information. A few ideas to try might be old scrapbooks, letters, diaries, calendars and family Bibles.
Next visit the courthouse in the county where your ancestor lived. Search such records as birth, death, marriage, wills, estates, deeds, mortgages and tax records. Local libraries can be helpful too. They may have such items as family genealogies, city and county histories, census records, directories and atlases. ALWAYS record the source of information.
By the time you have exhausted all these possibilities you will probably have filled several notebooks. You will probably have lots of questions and problems that you think can never be solved – but hang in there – the answer is somewhere. Good luck in your search.
Do you have a question on genealogy? If so, let us know, we will try to find the answer.
