Query
SIDLE, BOST
I am searching for as much information as possible on Peter SIDLE. He was born in PA in December 1832, and he died in Henry County, OH in 1906. He married Nancy BOST on June 14,1863 in Hemy County, and he served in Co. D, 68th OVI during the Civil War. He and his wife are buried at Hoy Cemetery in Henry Co. I am attempting to establish Peter SIDLE’S ancestry.

Odd Coincidence
Member 16, Karen Sunderman, of Deshler (and the editor), has a son who lives in FL. His family shows dogs and recently someone gave his daughter an old tack box to use for supplies. Printed on the top of the box was “Defiance Metal of Deshler, Ohio.” The friend who gave her the box had no idea they had connections to Ohio, let alone Deshler! Does anyone remember when these boxes were produced?

Old Settler Observes His 93rd Birthday
Mr. E. T. KLINE, one of the oldest residents of the Deshler area, celebrated his 93rd birthday at his farm home east of town on Tuesday. Born near Shawtown in Putnam County in 1861, he moved with his parents to Henry County just east of Deshler, in 1871.
At that time, Mr. Kline recalls, our town was called Alma, and had only one store, the STEARNS Grocery’ a hotel, called the Ohio House; and a blacksmith shop owned by John TURNBULL. This was before the B & 0 railroad was built through Deshler in 1874.
In 1890, Mr. KLINE married Elenor BUCHANAN, who died in 1936. Their six children are: two daughters, Jennie BOYER and Laura HUFFMAN, of Deshler; sons, Hobson, of Deshler, Ray of Columbus, Robert of El Dorado, Kansas, and Forrester, ofWhitehouse. Mr. KLINE has seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
County Citizens (from History of Henry County, Ohio by W. W. Campbell pub. 1905)
Benjamin Franklin CHRONINGER was born in Stark County, Ohio, on October 14,1843, the son of George and Elizabeth Ann (HINKLE] CHRONINGER, the father a native of the same county, while the mother was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They were married in 1840 and came to Henry County and settled on the present home farm, which then contained 80 acres and had been purchased from the government. Ten children were born to these parents, four of whom grew to maturity, Benjamin, the subject of this sketch; Henry, of Williams County, Ohio; Arminda, of Napoleon; and Elsie, who lives with her father.
The subject was reared on the home farm and attended the district schools, after which he engaged in teaching for a number of years. In 1870 he married and they went to housekeeping on a farm of their own, 160 acres, which was entirely covered with timber. He went manfully to work and the success which has attended his efforts is evinced in the splendid farm which now greets the eye – one of the best in Henry County. In 1892 the present handsome residence was built and many other substantial improvements have been made as needed. Mr. CHRONINGER has served his township as assessor six terms, and as president of the Patrons of Industry of Ohio two years.
On July 7,1870, Mr. CHRONINGER married Miss Asenath BABCOCK, who was born in this township on August 8,1851, her parents, Alonzo and Louisa BABCOCK, having come here as pioneers from Oneida County, New York, in 1834. Two children have come to Mr. and Mrs. CHRONINGER, Lillie Belle (Mrs. STEWART] and Raleigh Royal, who married Katherine PRICE, of this township. Mrs. STEWART is the mother of three children, Elmer, Vemis and Alta.
George W. VanPELT, a prosperous and respected farmer of Harrison Township, Henry County, was born in Seneca County, Ohio, on May 27,1833, the son of Vann and Mary Sophia (GRIFFON] VanPELT, both natives of Virginia. The father was a millwright in Seneca County and came to Henry County in 1851, settling in Harrison Township, where he bought 120 acres of wild land. He lived on this place about four years, his death occurring in 1855. His first wife died in 1835 and he subsequently married Mrs. Margaret (HUFFMAN] MYERS, who died in 1849 or 1850. To the first union were born three children, Isia William, William and George W.
The subject was about eighteen years of age when he came to Henry County, and he remained with his father until the latter’s death. He worked at farm labor and in his youth attended the common schools, securing a fair education. He has also spent about twenty-five years of his life at carpenter work. After his father’s death he was employed on various farms, and also worked some for his brother, who was a contractor and lumberman. In 1867 he came into possession of his present farm of 80 acres, to which he removed and which he has since continued to successfully operate, making of it a fine and productive farm. He is now practically retired from the more active labors of the farm, which have been assumed by his son-in-law, Logan DAVIS. In politics Mr. VanPELT is a Republican and served two terms as trustee of his township, which he has also served as supervisor and member or the school board. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1861 Mr. VanPELT enlisted in Co. D, 68th 0V1, and took part in all the engagements in which that noted regiment took part up to the expiration of his time of service, December 19,1864, when he was discharged.
In 1867 Mr. VanPELT was united in marriage to Miss Margaret J. DAWSON, who was born near Waterville, Lucas County, Ohio, August 19,1838, the daughter of Samuel and Catherine (SHARP] DAWSON, both natives of Ireland and the parents of five children, Margaret, Mary Ann, Edward Henry, Ellen and Elizabeth. To the subject and his wife have been born seven children, namely: James E., deceased; Fanny, deceased; Mary, the wife of George ARMBRUSTER, of Wood County, Ohio; Georgia, deceased; Gertrude, the wife of Logan DAVIS, who, as before indicated, resides on the home place.
Rev. Carl SCHROEDER, pastor of St. Paul’s German Lutheran church of Flat Rock township, Henry County, Ohio, is a native son of the Buckeye state, having been born at Toledo on January 18,1878, and is the son of Fredric and Dora (MILLER) SCHROEDER, both of whom were natives of Germany and settled in Toledo upon their emigration to the United States. The father is now a member of the firm known as the SCHROEDER Company of Toledo. Mrs. Dora SCHROEDER died in 1894. They were the parents of six children, namely: Herman and Fred live in Toledo; Minnie is the wife of William SUHRWE1R; Dora lives at home; one that died in infancy, and the subject of this sketch.
Carl SCHROEDER was reared in Toledo and had the advantage of attendance at the public and parochial schools. He subsequently attended the Springfield (Illinois) College during the years from 1893 to 1900. Upon being ordained into the ministry of the German Lutheran church he first was assigned to missionary work at Swanton, Ohio, where he was successfully engaged for two years, at the end of which time he came to his present pastorate in Flat Rock township. He is an indefatigable worker in the Master’s cause and has proved an efficient and popular pastor of St. Paul’s congregation. He not only attends to the spiritual wants of his people, but to the intellectual as well, as he also serves as the teacher in the parochial school.
In 1902 Rev. SCHROEDER married Miss Dora OTTE, the daughter of Frederick and Anna (BADEN) OTTE, natives of Germany, but who later emigrated to Henry County. To the subject and his wife have been born two children, Almeda and Elmer. In politics Rev. SCHROEDER is an independent Democrat, and is well liked by all who know him.
Frederick GERKEN, clerk of Freedom township, Henry County, is a native of this township, having been born on April 8,1861, and is the son of Harmon and Mary (MAHNKE) GERKEN, both of whom were born in Hanover, Germany, the father in 1828, and the mother the same year. In 1857 they came to Henry County, where they were married. They were the first Low Germans to settle in Freedom township. Nine years later they purchased 120 acres of land in section 29, the same township, and there spent the rest of their days, the father dying on October 8,1894, and the mother on February 2,1905.
The father was trustee of Freedom township for 15 years, and they were both members of the German Lutheran church. Their children were as follows: Henry, Mary (Mrs. Frederick HUNER), Frederick Herman, William, George and John.
The subject was reared on the parental farm until he was twenty years old. He then learned the carpenter’s trade, which he followed for eight years. In 1888 he began farming on his own account, renting part of the farm which he now owns, and in March, 1902, he located where he now lives, having built his present fine residence. He is the owner of 150 acres of good land in section 27, and also owns 40 acres in section 36 and 40 acres in section 34, all in Freedom township. In the fall of 1898 he, in association with several others, built the elevator at Gerald, and now owns 2/3 of the enterprise. He also owns a 1/3 interest in an elevator at Napoleon.
In 1887 Mr. GERKEN married Miss Ida HOGREFE, who was born in Adams township, now Defiance county, this state, on October 7,1863, the daughter of Henry HOGREFE, and to their union have been born the following children: August F., Paulina, Hulda, Frederick (now dead), Karl and Ida. In religion the family are affiliated with the Lutheran church. In politics Mr. GERKEN is a Democrat, and in the spring of 1894 he was elected clerk of Freedom township and has been retained, by successive re- elections, in the office ever since, certainly a marked testimonial to his ability, fidelity and popularity.
Christopher W. MEYER, proprietor of “The Fair,” one of Deshler’s leading stores, was born in Adams township, (now) Defiance county, Ohio, on June 28 1870, and is the son of John C. and Sophia (KOSTER) MEYER, both natives of the province of Hanover, Germany. They came to the United States in 1853, coming direct to Defiance county, Ohio, where they settled on their present farm of eighty acres in Adams township. They became the parents of ten children, of whom five are living, Maria, Henry, John C., Fred C., and Christopher.
The subject was reared on the home place and attended the common schools. In 1893 he went south to Florida, spending the following three years in that state, Georgia and Alabama. In 1896 he returned home, where he remained until 1901, when he came to Deshler and began clerking for Fred STURE (correct name STUVE) general merchant. In 1903 he opened a store in Deshler, known as “The Fair,” on a small scale. The enterprise proved successful and in June, 1904, he was compelled to seek better quarters, removing to his present location, in the heart of the business section. His first stock was a small one, but he now carries a stock valued at over $6,000, embracing notions, queensware, kitchen utensils, stoves, etc., having the only store of the kind in Deshler and one of the largest in Henry county.
Mr. MEYER married Miss Dora IMBROCK, who was born in the province of Brunswick, Germany, the daughter of Conrad IMBROCK, now of Bartlow township, this county. They have one child,Marguerite. Mr. and Mrs. MEYER are members of the Lutheran church. They take a deep interest in all movements for the general welfare of the community in which they live and are held in the highest esteem by all who know them.
George A. RETTIG, a pioneer farmer and leading citizen of Monroe township, was born September 3,1839, in Hessen, Germany, the son of Adam and Mariah (BREIGHT) RETTIG, both also natives of the fatherland. Adam was a miller in his native land and in 1846 came to the United States, settling in Crawford County, Ohio, where he worked in a mill and as a laborer for three years. He then removed to Flat Rock township, Henry County, and entered 40 acres of government land which he cleared up and developed into a good farm. He purchased additional land and at the time of his death. May 11,1888, he had 200 acres of fine land. His wife died in 1882. They were both members of the German Reformed church. To them were born 10 children, namely: Catharine, Eva, Adam B., George A., Michael, Gertrude, Peter, Nicholas, John and Lizzie.
George A. RETTIG remained at home with his parents until attaining his majority, going to school during the winter months and laboring on the farm in summer. At the time of his marriage, in 1886, he purchased 80 acres of his present farm, which at that time was wooded and largely swamp land, but he had, by dint of much labor, converted this into a valuable farm. He now owns 190 acres of land and is considered one of the practical and successful farmers of the county.
On January 19,1866, Mr. RETTIG married Miss E. Rosina KLINK, who was born in Crawford County, Ohio, the daughter of George and Catharine FREEDE, both natives of Germany, who came to Ohio in an early day, and died there. To Mr. and Mrs. RETTIG have been born7 children: John William; Samuel H., of Monroe township; Charles, of Flat Rock township; Matilda, the widow of Julius SNYDER; Emma, wife of William SNYDER; Ida, the wife of Daniel SNYDER; Olive, at home. All the members of this family are members of the German Reformed church. Mr. RETTIG is a Democrat in politics, though inclined to be independent in the casting of his ballot, preferring to be guided by his own best judgment. He has served as supervisor and school director. In 1861 Mr. RETTIG offered his services to his country, enlisting in Co. A, 68th OVI, with which command he served until the close of the struggle, taking an active part in all the engagements in which his regiment participated and receiving his discharge on July 10,1865.

Index of German Scrapbook Translations, Vol. 2
Several years ago a three-volume set of family scrapbooks was donated to our society. The items were cut from at least one German-language newspaper from this area, but not dated or otherwise identified. It is probable that most of the articles came Per Defiance Herold (1895-1920) and included items regarding families in western Henry Co. and in Twps. transferred to Defiance Co. Ken Thompson translated the German items for us. An index will be printed as space permits.
