IMPORTANT NOTICE…
There have been some inquiries regarding membership renewals. All memberships are due in January each year. When you joined, you were sent the newsletters that had been published to that point, thus making your membership retroactive to the beginning of the year. If you joined during the last two months of the year, your membership officially began Jan. 1 of the following year.
You will find membership forms in each Nov.-Dec. newsletter. You may list your surnames on that, mail them to our P. O. box, or send them to the editor by December in order to have them included in the Jan.-Feb. issue.
HCGS dues has increased for 2005 to $10.00. This is the first time the cost of dues has ever been raised. The increased cost of copying and mailing the newsletter makes this necessary. There will be no extra cost for a joint membership (two members at one address).

Newly Discovered…
An 1873 death record was mixed in with the 1874 and 1875 report:
BUCHANAN, Alpheus male, age 18, married, no occupation recorded, died of spinal fever on 29 Aug 1873, place of death: Liberty Twp., place of birth: Sciebues (?), NY, last residence: Liberty Twp.
Another death was recorded twice (I think):
PALMER, Aiken R., male, 9 months, single, no occupation, died of spinal fever on 7 Apr 1874, place of death: Harrison Twp., place of birth: Harrison Twp., last residence: Harrison Twp. PALMER, Aiken R., male, 9 months, single, no occupation, died of brain fever on 8 Apr 1874, place of death: Harrison Twp., place of birth: Harrison Twp., last residence: Harrison Twp.
It’s no wonder genealogists can’t find their ancestors or sort out the old records!
HeritageQuest
HeritageQuest, an on-line recourse available at the Edwin Wood Library in Deshler and also available to OGS members, has expanded to include some Revolutionary War Records. Selected pension records and Bounty Land Warrant Application files from the years 1800-1900 are included. Also American Army, Navy, and Marine personnel who participated in the war may be included. HeritageQuest provides access to over 25,000 published family and local histories and U.S. census records from 1790-1930.
HAYES PRESIDENTIAL CENTER LIBRARY
If you’re searching the area, the Hayes Library in Fremont, OH hosts an online Obituary Index (www.thhaves.org/index) and has records from 175 Northwest Ohio newspapers. Researchers now have access to more than 400,000 deceased individuals as well as more than 600,000 indexed sources (marriage licenses, wills, and estates) related to those people. A fee is charged for copying and mailing the information.
GERMAN DEFINITIONS (taken from Barbara Helberg’s Family History book)
HOF — pertains to the main house on a piece of property. It can also be understood as the whole farm entity. Used for Vollhof, Halbhofe and the Kote or Kotner Hoff.
HALB-MEIER — a serf, with limited freedom, holding a contract from the local liege lord, based on tithes and other taxes plus the Corvee duty. It was understood that the liege lord owned the land, but that the serf owned certain limited rights in the buildings and equipment. The farm was usually between 10 and 50 morgans with privileges in the communal land.
VOLLMEIER or MEIER –same as above, except that the farm would be about 30 to 90 morgan land.
KOTE or KOTHNER — usually an artisan, an employee of the nobleman, the village herdsman or a day laborer who all possessed a small house on land that belonged to a farm. He would sometimes have from 1 to 8 morgan land on which he did some farming for his own needs. (about 5 acres U.S.) A larger and more elaborate house was called a Grosskote, which was usually reserved for an employee of the local nobleman.
BRINKSITZER, BRINKOTHNER, ANBAUER or ABBAUER — same as for the Kothner, as mentioned above, but sometimes a house built on marginal lands at the edge of the village.
HAUSLING or HAUSMANN — a man who lived in rented quarters. Sometimes he would live in the bakehouse belonging to a farm. At other times he would live in a small kote or in part of a farmhouse. Sometimes the village herdsman or the school teacher would be housed as a hausling until a village kote bacame available for him.
HOLZVOGT — a man appointed by the local lord or governor whose main duties were those of a forest ranger who supervised the peasants’ use of the forest.
VOGT — a local official, a sheriff, who represented the duke or lord in his area.
HERDE or HIRDE — the village cattle, sheep or swine herder. He was appointed by the village elders to care for the farm animals on the communal lands.
COMMUNAL LANDS — a fairly large area of land, set aside by the local lords to the peasants could collectively graze their farm animals, where they could collect nuts and berries, and dig for peat. These lands were divided among the peasants in 1860.
AMTSGESCHWORENER or GESCHWORENER — the local village representative of the governor. His position later in the 19th century developed into the local mayor.
CITIZEN or BURGER — he was a person who had obtained a city or village document granting him the privilege of carrying on a business or profession within the community. (aka Guilds) He belonged to the elite who would take part in the management of the city or village affairs.
MORGAN — a land measure of 26.21 acres.
68th OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
From The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866, Vol. V.
The 68th was organized in Nov. and Dec. 1861 at Camp Latty, Napoleon, OH and mustered out July 10, 1865 at Louisville, KY. Due to the huge amount of information, only the soldier’s name, his company, rank, age and pertinent information such as being wounded or killed is included here. Note that being detached to a colored regiment does not mean the soldier was black. Colored regiments had white officers.
Mustered in 13 Dec 1861 at Camp Latty, Napoleon, OH by Patrick H. Mooney, Capt. 68th OVI. Mustered out 10 July 1865 at Louisville, KY by Cyrus M. Roberts, Capt. 78th OVI.
