GENEALOGY AND POLITICS

We have received no recent word about the Ohio Health Department’s decision on public access to vital records. If you wish to contact your state representatives and Governor Taft you can do so online at www.house.state.oh.us; www.senate.state.oh.us; or www.governor.ohio.gov.

If you are interested in how your state legislators have voted on issues before the General Assembly, you can go to Project Vote Smart at www.vote-smart.org. All you need to access your legislator’s voting record is your 9-digit zip code.

From the Henry County Signal 1 Dec 1881

FLORIDA WHIFFS

There has been a heavy trade in poultry at this point the past week or two. R. A. WOOD & J. W. LONG, dealers. Several barrels were taken to the station on Saturday and about twice the amount to be sent out yet.
Dr. A. M. KINNEY, now of Defiance, spent Sabbath with the family of H. R. ANDREW. Glad to see his familiar face on our streets once more, as his comings are like Angels visits, short and far between.
E. M. BRUBAKER of Hillsdale College is at home spending vacation with parents and friends.
A. L. BRUBAKER wishes Spring Hill were not so far away and the roads not so bad, as writing is such a slow way to talk.
And now the boss carpenter, BUCKLEMAN, heads the list with a boy that turns the scales at 12 pounds, all baby without the clothes thrown in.
Next shoemaker KIMMICK falls into line and thinks another pair of shoes wanted. He says its the prettiest little girl in town.
Hank ANDREW and sister Clara contemplate a trip to Butler county shortly. Mrs. OWENS and son Archie start for Allen county this week.
L. F. RICHOLT is not yet home; if he does not come soon he will have to charter a train to bring home the game.

From The Henry County Signal 20 April 1882

Because eleven hundred and twenty railroad tickets were sold at Holgate during the month of March, the Times remarks that “it is a good town to emigrate from.” –Deshler Flag
On Wednesday morning the new postmaster, Henry MISNER, took charge of the office and Mrs. STEPHENS, who so acceptably served the public for the past three years, stepped down and out. Mr. Misner will, no doubt, make a very good postmaster. –Deshler Flag

From The Henry County Signal 20 Sept 1883

For the year expiring Sept. 15, 1883, Messrs. VOCKE Bro. & WHEELER shipped 136 car loads of stuff from their Stave and Hoop factory, which was doing pretty well for the first year.
Mr. Christian BUCHLE and wife, who have been on a visit to their children in Nebraska, returned home last Monday, having had a pleasant trip and an agreeable visit.

68th OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
From The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866 Vol. V.

The 68th was organized in November and December 1861 at Camp Latty [Latta], Napoleon, OH and mustered out July 10, 1865 at Louisville, KY. Due to the huge amount of information, only the soldier’s name, his company, rank, age and pertinent information such as being wounded or killed is included here. Note that being detached to a colored regiment does not mean the soldier was black. Colored regiments had white officers.

HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

Does anyone know where Fort Glory was? There was a regular column of local news from there in the Deshler Flag at one time. Some of the names are those of people who lived northwest of Deshler. Was the Fort Glory church the same as Woodlawn Church? If anyone has some answers, please contact the editor.

From The Deshler Flag, 9 Mar 1900

FORT GLORY — Mrs. Lillie PLOTTS has returned home from an extended visit with her sister at McClure.
Henry DECKER had a new arrival at his home Tues. evening of the male gender.
The new German church, north of this place, which was lately dedicated, is progressing finely under the care of Rev. RUSH, of Hamler.

From The Deshler Flag 16 Mar 1900

FORT GLORY — Mrs. Thomas SINGER is on the sick list. Mrs. Emmett HOLMES is visiting relatives at Portage. Mrs. John ROOF is visiting relatives in Arkansas. Charles SINGER, of McClure, visited his parents here last week.
LOCALS — Chester FERRELL and Nellie BEHRENS were married by Squire MEEKER one evening last week.
Little Harley, infant son of Henry and Annie DECKER, died on the 11th.
Mr. Horace DUNN received word Tues. that his aunt, Mrs. Maria STRETCHER, of Cedarville, OH, was dead. She was also a sister of J. B. and E. T. DUNN.
A marriage license has been granted to A. R. BLACKSTONE and Miss Ada COX of this city. The couple were married by Squire LONG at the home of Mrs. Belle SHERMAN last Fri. evening.

From The Deshler Flag 6 Apr 1900

Married, at the home of Rev. W. J. ESTERBROOK, last Mon. evening, Mr. R. L. YOXTHEIMER and Miss Minnie KAISER, both of this place.
Died, on Sat. evening, an infant child of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. HILL, of Elm St., aged about 8 months.
