WE EXTEND OUR SYMPATHY

To the family of Loretta (Stevens) Mann, one of our charter members, from Delta, OH. Mrs. Mann died June 6, 2003. Her husband, Paul, a son, a daughter, a sister and five grandchildren survive.

CENSUS RECORDS

Our thanks to Steven Badenhop, new member, who has copied the census records we are publishing. It’s nice to have a young person involved, especially one who is computer literate and willing to share the fruits of his labor.

Steve has also copied the complete Henry County census records for 1830, 1840 and 1850. They will be available in the Edwin Wood Memorial Library at Deshler.

QUERIES

DUNN
Tying to track William H. Dunn, a member of the 1869 John Wesley Powell expedition down the Colorado River. Dunn was a trapper who probably lived in Ohio ca. 1840-1850-1860s. Because he died on the trip, his age and birthplace are not known. I am a Powell historian who is searching for Dunn.

This is your space. We print all queries that come to us and are related to Henry County–membership is not required. Send queries to Henry Co. Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 231, Deshler, OH 43516 or to the editor at Henry County Genealogical Society Newsletter.

NEW TO OUR COLLECTION

The following books have been added to our collection at the Edwin Wood Memorial. Library, Deshler, OH: Histories of the following families: Sunderman, Baden, Rosebrock, and Tietje.

Visit our Internet Web page at http://www.henrycountyohiogenealogy.org/index.html. The site features such items as membership information, membership and book order forms, event lists, First Families information, and back copies of newsletters, plus you can search for references to your ancestors quickly by using the Search Site button at the top of the page.

Be aware that Ohio House Bill 95 passed and there will no longer be uncertified copies of vital records available from the Ohio Dept. of Health and local vital statistics registrars. Certified copies will now be $15 (an additional $5). This went into effect July 1. Some registrars will not issue copies without proof that you are a relative — just what we’re trying to prove ourselves! This is all due to identity theft, so please be patient with the registrars as they try to follow the new legislation.

1850 Mortality Schedule: Henry County, Ohio
James L. Murphy, The Ohio Historical Society
OR & PF Vol. 20 p. 101

The following information has been transcribed from the original mortality schedules housed in the Archives-Manuscripts Division of The Ohio Historical Society: name of every person who died during the year ending 1st June, 1850; age; sex; married or widowed; place of birth; month of death; occupation; cause of death; number of days ill. There were no entries under “Colour” or “Free or Slave”. The enumerator made the following remarks: “There have been 47 deaths within the year ending on the 1st of June, 1850, in Henry County. The Cholera has prevailed in some neighboring counties, but not much of it has been in this county. This county is very level and abounds in Limestone, and slate mingled with stone coal; & sulpher springs and gass springs. Bilious diseases are the most common in this county.”

It should be noted that only 44 deaths occurred, the enumerator for some reason repeating the last three entries on the schedule.
