QUERIES

QUILLMANN, ALLEN, BURMAN, GLYNN, SCOTT, BROWN, SMITH
Looking for parents and burial place of Ella Gertrude ALLEN, birthdate unknown. She m. Ulysses Franklin (Frank) QUILLMAN (1868-1939, son of John and Eva BURMAN) in 1889 Henry Co., OH Children: Beryl who m. _____ GLYNN, resided Anchorage, AK; John Robert (1892-1938) who m. Nellie SCOT in 1920, 4 ch., resided Napoleon, OH. According to Frank Quillman’s obituary, Ella d. sometime before his marriage to Lillian BROWN in 1900. Is it possible the couple divorced and the family smoothed it over with the story of Ella’s death? There is a Gertrude QULLMAN who married an Adam Smith listed in “Early Henry Co. Marriages.” I believe it was after 1892, which means it could have been Ella Gertrude Allen’s second marriage. On John Robert Quillman’s death certificate, his mother’s name is listed as Gertrude ALLEN.

RESEARCHING GENEALOGY

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN? Begin with yourself. Proceed from present to the past. Record your name, place and date of birth, marriage and residence. Search out and record the same information for your parents, your grandparents, and so on through as many generations as possible. Interview older living members of your family. Genealogical publications can be helpful. You may find someone else doing research on the same family or in the same area. The library will have some of the following sources: family genealogies, municipal and county histories, census records, directories, biographies and military records.
OTHER PLACES TO LOOK: Vital records-birth certificates. marriage records, death certificates. Probate records — wills, letters of administration, executor and administrator bonds, inventories and appraisals, adoption proceedings, change of names, secret marriages. Land records — deeds, mortgages, leases, recorded wills, power of attorney, maps and plats. Civil records — partition of property, divorces, foreclosures. Miscellaneous records — voter registration, tax and assessment rolls, naturalization records. Federal records –censuses, military records, passenger lists, passport records, immigration records, homestead applications, pension applications. Church records – membership rolls, baptisms, marriages, burial and cemetery records. School and college records – rosters and rolls. Family records – family Bible, old family documents, diaries, letters, signed photographs, engraved jewelry, newspaper clippings, wills, 1odge records, insurance papers, social security papers, employment records.
BEWARE: Remember that information found on the internet is only as accurate as the person who recorded it. For that matter, so is material from your family. It is best to check original sources. Don’t be too concerned about spellings of names. Each person who recorded information, whether a census taker or immigration officer, may have had a certain way they spelled Catherine/Kathrin/etc. or may have had terrible handwriting that could be misinterpreted later. Check all possibilities and keep an open mind.
