Query: PATTEEUW

Searching for information on Honare Patteeuw/Henry Patteen. I believe he came PATTEEN to the states ca. 1907 from Belgium. He was naturalized 28 Sept 1915 in Henry CROCKETT Co., but did not receive the certificate until 12 May 1958. I would like to find his Application papers. He lived with his wife Mary (Crockett) in Henry Co. about 1910-1920 and his son, Frank, was b. in McClure during that time.

Thank you. -Randi Patteen, Coleman, MI 48618-9106

Index of German Scrapbook Translations Vol. 3

Several years ago a three-volume set of family scrapbooks was donated to our society. The items were cut from at least one German-language newspaper from this area, but not dated or otherwise identified. It is probable that most of the articles came Per Defiance Herold (1895-1920) and included items regarding families in western Henry Co. and in Twps. transferred to Defiance Co. Ken Thompson is translating the items for us. Only a few pages of Vol. 3 are in German. An index will be printed as space permits.

Leap Year

Most years that can be evenly divided by 4 are leap years, A century year such as 1800,1900, or 2000, can be evenly divided by 4, but it’s not a leap year unless it can also be evenly divided by 400.

2000 was a leap year.

This century rule was made in 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII, whose calendar we use today, replaced the one introduced by Julius Cesar in 46 B.C. in an attempt to align the calendar year with the solar year. He also decreed Oct. 4 would immediately be followed by Oct. 15.

Many countries declined to go along with the 10-day jump. Until 1752, on the day calendars read January 17 in England, they read Jan. 28 in Catholic Europe. Russia didn’t give in until 1918, and Greece held out until 1923.

If you still cannot determine when your ancestor was born, go to people.albion.edu/machines/calendar/Regnal_Years.html for help with conversion dates.
