DNA, Anyone?
Although a member of one of my family lines suggested it years ago, I was not interested in having my DNA tested until I saw just the end of the PBS program “Faces of America—Know Thyself.” I contacted my distant cousin about DNA testing again and he gave me these addresses which I will pass along, just in case you also become interested:
http://dna.ancestrv.eom/manualSelectTvpe.aspxandhttp://groups.ancestrv.com/group/43907773. He used Ancestry for Y-DNA testing, but he has not had a close match because few of our family members have been tested. He suggested that I watch for special promotions. There are also other sites.
Our January meeting will feature the “Faces of America” program on DNA and more extended ancestral testing. If bad weather forces us to cancel, we will have it in February. You, your family, and friends are welcome to come. If that is not possible, perhaps your library will be able to rent a copy of the program or, of course, it is available from PBS for under $25. —The Editor
The Inevitable Laws of Genealogy
Your grandmother’s maiden name for which you’ve searched for years was on an old letter in a box in the attic all the time.
When at last you have solved the mystery of the skeleton in the closet, the tight-lipped spinster aunt claimed, “I could have told you that!”
The relative who had all the family photographs gave them to her daughter, who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.
Brittle old newspapers containing the information you desired have fallen apart along fold lines-just where the names, dates, and places you need occur.
And if nothing similar has ever happened to you … count your blessings!
History of Harrison Township, 1888
Abstracted from History of Henry and Fulton Counties, OH, edited by Lewis Cass Aldrich and other references.
This township was named for William Henry Harrison, hero of Tippecanoe and Fort Meigs, and the ninth president of the U.S. Organized in the early 1840’s, it once contained townships 3,4 and 5 of range 7. Three is now the township of Marion, four was organized into Monroe in 1850. All of sections 1-6 and parts of 7-12 were attached to Liberty Twp. prior to 1850 for voting purposes.
Among the earliest settlers of Harrison Twp. was Hazael STRONG, who came as early as 1833 and later moved to Napoleon to become the county auditor. The SHEATS family came in 1834, Alonzo PACKARD in 1843, Americus M. SPAFFORD in 1845, Harper CENTRE in 1847, Thomas RANDALL II in 1848; Isaac INGLE in 1849, Noah JACKSON in 1852, John C. LIGHTHISER in 1853, Michael KRYDER in 1853, the David HOY family; the RITTER/REITER family; SPANGLER and PALMER families: Campbell WILFORD: and GIDEON G. CREAGER were also early settlers.
In 1847 there were only 49 persons who paid personal tax and the value of the land—69,120 acres—was $22,168. The township was tardy in settlement and slow to improve until construction of the canal (1845) and the Wabash Railroad, on the south side of the river, affording convenient shipments to market. The construction of the dam at Providence had made the river unfordable between that point and the rapids at Florida and with no roads of any kind, and no railroads, the only method of reaching a market was to ferry the river. In some seasons that was difficult Most settlement consequently took place on the north side of the river.
There were men hardy and courageous enough to enter these dense forests, and, braving all the difficulties and encountering all the inconveniences, made homes in the wilderness. Along the river bank, in section 10, was Samuel BOWERS; in 9 Hazael STRONG had settled; in 8 the RUGG farm farther up the river and nearly opposite Napoleon; in 18, Charles and Reuben REITER had made large clearings; on 15 were the PALMERS; John D. THORN; and a few others; John SHEATS was in Sec. 22; and on Turkey Foot road were John C. LEIGHTHISER, Levi SPANGLER, and others.
There were also a few settlers along the banks of Turkey Foot Creek. George G. CREAGER was on Sec. 24 and Campbell WILFORD on 25. It was not until after the construction of the bridge across the Maumee at Napoleon, in 1860, that settlement really began in earnest in Harrison Twp. Then road improvement and drainage systems were commenced and resulting heavy taxation and assessments compelled non-resident land owners to dispose of lands they had purchased for speculative purposes. Actual settlers made farms from the forest and to assist in this the giant oaks, walnut and poplar were sold to the ship-timber and other timber merchants, who brought gangs of men from Canada to clear the swamps. Then came the saw-mill and stave factory.
The “Clover Leaf’ railroad passes close to the southeast comer where Damascus, Richfield and Monroe come together, and here is laid out the hamlet of Grelleton [sic].
On Rt. 109, a collection of homes was named SHUNK, after John SHUNK, who operated an early trading post and post office there. HOY Cemetery is also located there.
