Looking For…

Articles of interest to Henry County for the newsletter and photos to be scanned and featured on our website.

Truly Grateful …

Since the Henry Co. Gen. Soc. was organized in 1987 we have met at Edwin Wood Memorial Library most of the time. In gratitude, we recently presented the library with a check for $1,000.

A Bit of Bragging….

We have also published 93 books, rescued county records from being destroyed and are working on donating them to NW State, established a website with lots of information, and are re-reading all the county cemeteries.

HENRY COUNTY SOCIETY NEWS

Jim Rebar and Marlene Patterson are working to complete the death records. There are also several people working to input cemetery records that have been read. Of course, we need feet on the ground to continue to read and update the cemeteries.

One member is working on church records. She is interested in finding the records for Methodist churches in the county. If anyone else is interested, please contact us. Another member is Working on birth records.

A list of projects we would like to complete appeared in the May-June 2009 newsletter. Some can be done by computer if you live out of state. We only have a handful of active members, so we welcome help from others. From the beginning our goal has been to put Henry Co. information “out there” and, if you notice our accomplishments on page 1, we’ve done a remarkable job for such a small chapter.

History of Pleasant Township, 1888

Abstracted from History of Henry and Fulton Counties, OH, ed. by Lewis C. Aldrich

No written records are preserved from the early organization of this township. The township lies in the extreme southwestern part of the county and was once part of Flatrock Twp., being detached about 1843. The earliest settlers in this locality were George A. HOFRICKER, Henry SAUR, Frederick LOESCH, George DIRR, Andrew GARDNER and Peter GRIMM, who came here in 1836. It was then a howling wilderness of water, frogs, wolves, bear, deer, turkeys, coon and other animals.

The following year there were others, some of whom were John P. HORNUNG, George A. YOUNG, Adam MENSEL, John FRIBERGER and Paul RENOLET. From this time down to 1844 there were Casper MANGAS and his sons Peter, Jacob and Henry; Paul EDING and his sons Gerhart (Jared) and Hannon; Theobold BOLLEY (early treasurer); George and Daniel WOLFE; John BATES; John HELRICH; Stephen BYAL; John WILHELM; Daniel DESGRANGES; Frederick MARTZ; James SHASTEEN (the first justice of the peace); Henry SCHALL (probably first clerk and a justice of the peach for 39 yrs.) and John DIEMER, all heads of families; with the exception of the sons of MANGAS and EDING.

Children of the families residing in the twp. enumerated for public schools in 1838 were: Joseph WADDEL, 1 male; Casper MANGAS, 4 males; Peter HURNUNG, 1 male & 1 female; Peter HORNUNG, Jr. 1 female;_MARCH, 4 males; G. A. HOFRICKTER, 2 males & 1 female; George DIRR, 1 female; Peter GRIM, 1 males & 5 females; John FRIBERGER, 1 male & 4 females; David DORIDER, 2 males & 2 females; John BATES, 2 males & 1 female; ___ HELRICH, 1 male & 1 female.

About 1840 Mr. EASTERBROOK, an Englishman, taught the first school in the settlement and continued three or four winter terms of three months each. While thus engaged he wrote a pamphlet biography of his life, styling himself David CROCKET second. Among other things, it contained reminiscences of his teaching among the “benighted beings” of the wilds of Henry County. James E. SCOFIELD followed him as teacher of the school in 1844-45, two winter terms. His pupils included his wife, then a school girl ten years his junior.

The younger heads of families, some of whom married daughters of the first settlers were: John HOFRIETER, Joseph SCHNEIDER (a shoemaker), Henry DIRR, George DIRR, John BAWMAN, Charles KESSELMEYER (a wagon maker), George N. WOLF, Henry GRIMM, William SAUR, John LOESCH, Henry LOESCH, Meni LOESCH, Adam LOESCH, Andrew LOESCH, Margaret SAUR, Caroline WOLF, Elizabeth WOLF, Daniel WOLF, Phillip DORIDER, John M. YOUNG, Elizabeth GRIMM, Henry BATES, and Paul HEISCH.

Local churches include the German Methodist north of Pleasant Bend and NW of New Bavaria, the German Reformed, on the Ridge road one mile W of New Bavaria, and a Catholic church two miles east of New Bavaria, replacing one destroyed by fire.

Nicholas LAUBENTHAL, twp. clerk is engaged in merchandising and sale of agricultural machinery and wagons, farming and saw-milling. Peter ANGUS, farmer and stock dealer, commenced business about 1844 and married Sarah JACKMAN ca. 1851-52. The ridge road extended from Defiance to Maderia, Putnam Co., where there was a steam flouring-mill. Settlement was first along the ridge.

Land, Town Lots and Chattel Returned Deliquent

By the Treasurer of Henry County, January, 1853

More information on the taxes owed is in the book, but not included here. These were early settlers or land owners in these townships.
