Marjorie W. Whiteman, 87, Route 1, Road V, Liberty Center, died Sunday evening in her family home.
She was born Nov. 30, 1898, to Herbert L. and Margaret (Bonnell) Whiteman.
A graduate of Wauseon High School and Ohio Wesleyan University, she taught at Napoleon High School for five years. She received a doctorate in international law at Yale University Law School.
An authority on international law, she served for 40 years as the assistant legal advisor to ten U.S. secretaries of state.
Whiteman also served as legal advisor to Eleanor Roosevelt while she was a U.S. represenative to the United Nations.
She was the author of the Whiteman Digest of International Law 1963-69, published by the State Department.
Retired in 1970, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, Wauseon, and the Society of Women Geographers.
Surviving are two sisters, Helen L. Whiteman and Gertrude Murdock, both of Liberty Center.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Norma McClarron.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberty Chapel in the United Methodist Church, County Road D, Rev. Marvin Schamaun officiating. Interment will be at Young Cemetery, Liberty Center.
