Obituary:
John T. West, son of John and Mary Hopkins West, was born in Carrol county, Maryland, May 11, 1830, and departed this life on January 22, 1924 in Liberty Center, Ohio, at the advanced age of 93 years, 8 months and 11 days.
His boyhood days were spent on a farm in the hills of Maryland, going from there with his parents to Parkersburg, West Virginia, and from there to Philadelphia, Penn.
He was united in marriage with Patience Spiegle on June 1, 1852. To this union were born eight children, Mrs. West with four children preceded him to the great beyond. Four children are left to mourn the passing of a dear father. They are Mrs. Mary Leitner, John T., Adam G., and Mrs. Eva Furney, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
In the spring of 1858 he, with his wife and two children moved to Ohio and settled in Henry county at Damascus. Few knew better than they the privations and disadvantages of pioneer life.
Mr. West was a member of the Wabash Encampment No. 262 I. O. O. F., Liberty Center Lodge No 718 I. O. O. F., having joined in Philadelphia, transferred to Napoleon Lodge and again transferred to Liberty Center. He was a member of the F. & A. M. No. 618 and also belonged to the G. A. R. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Co. C, 128 Reg. O. V. I.
He was a member of St. John’s Reformed church of Liberty Center, having united in March 1898 under the pastorate of Rev. C. A. Row. He was a faithful worker and supporter of the church of his choice and for several years served as deacon and elder.
For several years before his death he was the last of nine men who founded the town of Liberty Center in 1862.
