Death Takes Amos A. Ward
Liberty Center War Veteran Expires
Liberty Center, O., Aug 20 (Special) -- Amos A. Ward, 89, last Civil War veteran of Liberty Center, died last night in Memorial hospital, Napoleon, after an illness of two weeks.
Born in Baltimore, O., on March 21, 1847, he enlisted at the age of 16 and was a member of Co. G, 17th Ohio, third division, and fought under General Sherman. Among the important battles in which he took part were Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and Tunnel Hill.
Taken ill, he was later assigned to guard prisoners and refugees on the train from Chattanooga to Nashville and would relate later how the guards turned their back so the prisoners could escape.
Mr. Ward was the last charter member of Addison Clark post G. A. R. and the only Henry county war veteran who was a Mason.
Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Lena Mack, of 709 Fernwood avenue, matron in the women’s bureau at the Safety building and a brother, W. M. Ward, 1919 Calumet avenue, Toledo. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.”
