Sarah Catherine Varner, daughter of James and Cynthia Winters, was born in Hardin county, Ohio, near Kenton, August 14, 1853. Her father passed away in 1889 and her mother and only brother died in 1893. She was married to James L. Hatcher January 1, 1875, and to this union were born three daughters and one son. Two other daughters died in childhood, and her husband passed away June 21, 1883. She was married to Mason Varner September 13, 1888. She died in her late residence in Liberty Center, Ohio June 1, 1914, aged 69 years, 9 months and 17 days.
Mrs. Varner united with the M.E. Church in Liberty Center under the pastorate of Rev. J. W. Miller November 5, 1899 and has remained a consistent Christian until called to the church triumphant.
Mrs. Varner was of a quiet, hospitable disposition, a kind neighbor always ready to minister to the comfort of others and to aid those who were sick. She was highly respected by the people and loved by the church.
Mrs. Varner was also a charter member of the Union Lodge number 273 Daughters of Rebekah. She is survived by her husband her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Decker, of Toledo, and her son, Charles Hatcher of Liberty Center, and four grandchildren and many friends to mourn her death.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Thursday at 3 o’clock June 4, Rev. J. C. Crider officiating. The members of Union Lodge number 275 Daughters of Rebekah attended in a body and read the Lodge burial service at the church. Interment was made in Young’s Cemetery with the ritual service of the M. E. church.
