Funeral services for Wilbur M. (Mike) Spiess, 69, former mayor and police chief of Liberty Center were held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church, Liberty Center, with Reverend Kenneth E. Brown officiating.
He died Sunday, May 14, 1978 in Toledo Hospital after an extended illness.
Spiess served as police chief in Liberty Center until his retirement in 1974 and was mayor of the village during 1946-47.
The deceased was also a retired school bus driver, the former owner of Spiess Implement, Liberty Center, a former salesman for Massey-Ferguson, Bowling Green for 10 years and a member of the Liberty Center Cemetery Board. He was also a member of the Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church, Liberty Center Lodge 718 I.O.O.F. and Past Noble Grand, a member of the Liberty Center Fire Department and a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
He was presently serving as Liberty Center Building and Zoning Inspector.
Spiess was born April 25, 1909 in Henry County the son of Lewis and Blanche (Miller) Spiess. He married Pearle Ferguson on December 27, 1968 and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Larry, Napoleon; a daughter Mrs. Joan Rivera, Napoleon; a stepson, Danny Slee, Whitehouse; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Walter (Linda) Helmke, Defiance; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Mrs. Lucy Willis, Mrs. Earl (Mary) Ernsberger, both of Liberty Center; Mrs. Albert (Doris) Bargman, Napoleon; and Mrs. Luella Lutz, Montpelier; five brothers, Dewey, Homer, Clyde, Lloyd and Lewis, all of Liberty Center.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Frances Daso; his second wife, the former Opal Heckman ; three infant children, a brother, Dale and five infant brother and sisters.
Henry County Firefighter Association services were held Monday and Oddfellow services on Tuesday. Burial was in Youngs Cemetery. Croll-Wright Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
