Merton Smith, 66, of Holgate died Tuesday evening at the Henry County Hospital.
Born in Northwood Aug. 26, 1925, he was the son of Merton Sr. and Alma (Dayton) Miller. On June 5, 1948, he married Ann Hatcher and she survives.
He had been a construction worker with the Lathrop Corp. of Toledo for 20 years and a truck driver for GM Central Foundry in Defiance 13 years, retiring in 1977. He was a Navy Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Napoleon's DAV #30 and American Legion Post #300, UAW #211 and the Grand Rapids Wesleyan Church. He was also a former Liberty Center scoutmaster and avid bowler and softball player.
Also surviving are three sons, Robert of Detroit, James of Napoleon and David of Archbold; two sisters, Dorothy Dunberger of Northwood and Viola Winekoff of Wayne, Mich.; and four grand-children.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Walter.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Rapids Wesleyan Church, Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Interment will be at the Youngs Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be accorded by a joint unit of Napoleon's veterans organizations.
Friends may call at the Wright Funeral Home in Grand Rapids after 7 p.m. today and after 2 p.m. on Friday.
