Delia Abbie Showman, daughter of Calvin and Amanda Young, was born Jan. 7, 1850, in a log cabin located at the rear of Young’s cemetery. Her final resting place is in the same ground over which she played as a little girl.
Some sixty years ago, Delia Young was active in the community life of Liberty Center, as a school teacher, and as organist and worker in the Reformed church.
United in marriage on Nov. 9, 1881, to Charles Showman. In 1883 her husband built the home on their farm where they lived and raised their family. In 1915 they moved to Texas village, where they have lived ever since; nearly 58 years of happy married life is the long record.
Mrs. Showman was the mother of five children: Cloyce, Mell, Mrs. Meme Crosier, Mrs. Fred Pohlman and Mrs. Lucy Johnson, all living; one grandson, Leland Johnson, died in 1934; and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Morey and Mrs. Cora Warner, are all that remain of the Young family.
For the past three years Mrs. Showman had been a semi-invalid, the last year a period of intense suffering; cared for by her devoted husband and her sister; Cora.
Departing on Aug. 27, 1939, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 20 days, she leaves cherishing her memory and example, husband, children and grandchildren, two sisters, many kinsfolk, and a host of friends and neighbors.
