Funeral services for Walter I. Shockey have been set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Walker Mortuary, Napoleon, with the Reverend Tom Hanover officiating. Interment will follow at Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center. Friends may call between 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the mortuary.
Shockey, 68, Route 1, Liberty Center, died Sunday in the South Lake Memorial Hospital, Claremont, Florida.
He was born March 11, 1914, in Cincinnati to Walter and Elsie (Crowthers) Shockey.
Before retirement, Shockey worked as the public relations director of Mercy Hospital, Toledo, a position he held for 20 years. He also was the former editor and publisher of the Liberty Press from 1949 to 1960.
He was a United States Naval veteran. While serving, Shockey was stationed in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked in the public information office.
Shockey was a 50-year member of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay member. Also, he organized the American Association of Retired Persons of Henry County and Liberty Center. He was a member and past president of the Liberty Center Rotary Club.
Other memberships include: Toledo Kiwanis Club, the Newspaper Editors Association and the Liberty Center Sportsmen’s Club. Shockey also served as a tour guide at Sauder’s Museum, Archbold. He was a graduate of Miami University, Oxford.
Surviving is his wife, Helen (Watson) Shockey; three sons, Walter James and William of Orlando, Florida, and Robert C., Liberty Center; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (JoAnn) Davis, Liberty Center, and Mrs. Gregory (Linda Kay) Williams, Coshocton; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Norris, Dayton, and seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death was one sister, Ruby.
The family suggests memorials may be sent to the Liberty Center United Methodist Church or the Henry County Heart Fund.
