Walter I. Shockey, 68, former owner, publisher and editor of the Liberty Press, died Sunday, January 2 in the South Lake Memorial Hospital, Clermont, Florida. He was in Florida to spend the winter months, arriving there only a week ago.
Mr. Shockey came to Liberty Center from Hamilton, Ohio and purchased the Press in 1949 from Thomas and Cass Cox. Along with the Press he printed Henry County and other Farm Bureau papers and telephone books. The paper was operated as a family business until it was sold in 1960.
After selling the Press, he worked for a public relations firm in Toledo and later accepted public relations duties at Mercy and St. Charles Hospitals in Toledo. In 1970 he assumed the duties of full time director at Mercy Hospital, the third largest hospital in Toledo. Mr. Shockey retired in early 1980.
Shockey has previously worked in public information for the navy in Bar Harbor, Maine and Jacksonville, Florida, upon graduation from Miami University.
He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, a member of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church and a lay leader of the church.
Shockey was a meber of the Toledo Kiwanis Club, a past president of the Liberty Center Rotary Club, a member of the Newspaper Editor's Association, a member of the Liberty Center Sportsmen's Club and a guide at Sauder's Museum.
He was originator of the American Association of Retired Persons in Liberty Center and Henry County.
Shockey was born March 11, 1914 in Cincinnati, the son of Walter and Elsie (Crowthers) Shockey. He married Helen Watson and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, Jim and William, Orlando, Florida, and Robert, Liberty Center; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (JoAnn) Davis, Liberty Center and Mrs. Greg (Linda Kay) Williams, Coshocton; a sister, Mrs. Thelma Norris, Dayton; and several grandchildren. A sister Ruby preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary, Napoleon, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Walker Mortuary with Reverend Thomas Hanover, officiating. Interment will be in Youngs Cemetery.
