Robert Van Valsie Shirey was born in Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, March 18, 1856, and died at his home in Deshler, Ohio, Oct. 9, 1912, aged 56 years, 6 months and 21 days.
At Red Cloud Mr. Shirey met Miss Stella Holcomb, to whom he was married August 16, 1882. To whom were born four children, Robert Keys; Ralph Holcomb; Helen, and a daughter who died in infancy.
Mr. Shirey’s death came without warning. He had attended to his duties at the bank on Tuesday though he complained of a slight pain in his chest. This pain increased in the evening and he sought his family physician, who prescribed for him. About midnight he said he was feeling much better but that the pain was still there to some extent. About three o’clock Wednesday morning Mrs. Shirey noticed that he was breathing with difficulty and failing to arouse him she phoned Dr. Gehrett, but when the doctor arrived Mr. Shirey was dead. The remains were brought to Liberty Thursday. and the funeral was held at the residence Friday at 2:30. Rev. W. N. Shank, a former minister at this place, now pastor of the Monroe St. M. E. church, Toledo, offered prayer, and then Defiance Commandery K. T. took charge. In addition to the Commandery, Liberty Center F. and A. M. and Liberty Center I. O. O. F. attended in bodies. Interment was made in Young’s cemetery
