Retired Real Estate, Insurance Agent Taught School Briefly in Henry County
Helen V. Shirey, 78, a retired Toledo real estate and insurance agent, died Tuesday in the Holly Glen Care Center, where she had been living since last June. Miss Shirey formerly was a resident of the 2300 block of Monroe Street.
She taught briefly in the Henry County school system after receiving her teaching certificate from Defiance College in the early 1920s. In the mid-1920s she came to Toledo and was associated with George B. Rickaby, a realty broker and insurance agent. She bought the business from him in 1930 and changed the name to the H. V. Shirey Co. She retired in 1955, and her firm was merged with the Jefferson Insurance Agency, Inc.
She was a member of Zonta Club and the Liberty Center, O., Order of Eastern Star.
Services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Ansberg-West Mortuary.
