J. Lewis Shinew Loses His Life by Drowning in Turkey Foot Creek
J. Lewis Shinew, aged 54, whose home was just across the road from the Damascus school house one-half mile west and two miles south of this place, met his death by drowning in Turkey-Foot creek near his home Friday afternoon at about five o’clock.
Mr. Shinew, Geo. Atkinson, Isaac Murdock and a man named Newhouse were seining in the creek just west of the bridge which spans the creek at the point named. At this place there is a hole in which the water is about eight feet in depth. Mr. Shinew, while assisting with the seine got beyond his depth and was seized with cramps and before his companions could go to his assistance he sank from sight. The other men in the party gave the alarm and nearby neighbors were soon on the scene to render assistance, but it was not until half an hour after the accident that the body was located and brought to shore by William Daum, and after the Coroner had viewed the remains the body was carried to the home.
The victim of this sad accident is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in Liberty Center Monday at ten o’clock, Rev. Porter officiating. The Order of Owls, of which deceased was a charter member, had charge of the ritualistic work, and the Gleaners of Liberty Center Arbor, with which he was also affiliated, attended the funeral in a body. Interment in Young’s cemetery.
