Herman August Schlender was born in Bolster, Dramberg Co., Germany, May 4, 1844, and died at his home in Liberty Center, Ohio, April 25, 1917, aged 72 years, 11 months and 21 days.
In 1868 he came to America, locating at Peru, Indiana, where he became a charter member of the then organized German Ferine, a German fraternity. In 1871 he removed to Texas, Ohio, and made that place his permanent home, and there his six children were born.
Deceased was married to Catharine Dillman January 10, 1872. To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, a son and daughter dying in childhood.
About 31 years ago Mr. Schlender and his family moved to Liberty Center and continued to reside here until his death.
Father Schlender was catechized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany and continued his adherence to that faith up to his end; a firm believer in God and his Lord Jesus Christ, settled and fixed in his religious convictions.
Father Schlender was an honorable, consistent man, a good and very useful citizen, being one of the finest mechanics in the country. His life and his honorable dealings with his fellow man caused neighbors and fellow citizens to hold him in high esteem.
On April 29, 1857, he was enlisted in the military service of his country, serving in the artillery and received an honorable discharge before coming to this country.
Deceased leaves, besides his sorrowing companion, two sons, Henry, of this place, and Frederick, of Chicago, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie White and Mrs. Mary Chilcote of Toledo. There are several grandchildren, one brother, John, of Peru, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Monteir, of Indianapolis.
Funeral services were held at the residence in Liberty Center, Sunday, April 29, 1917, Rev. D. E. Martz of De Long, Ind„ officiating. Interment in Young’s cemetery.
