Herman B. Romaker, 88, died Thursday morning in Karmenta Health and Care Center, Madison, Wisconsin, where he had been a patient since November 2, following a two-year illness.
Mr. Romaker was superintendent of schools at Liberty Center for 36 years, retiring in 1956. He was a member of Liberty Center United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Liberty Center F&AM Lodge #518 and a charter member of Gilbert-Bauman American Legion Post #492.
A member of the Ohio and national teachers’ associations, he also served for several years on the Henry County Teachers’ Examining Board and Ohio Teachers’ Certification Board.
He was a graduate of McClure High School, attended Ohio Northern University and University of Chicago and received degrees from Defiance College and Ohio State University. Mr. Romaker was a veteran of World War I.
Born in McClure on November 26, 1892, he was the son of John and Jennie (Walters) Romaker. On March 31, 1918, he married Leah Danlord, and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Rosemary) Smith, Elkhart, Indiana; a son, Dr. Robert Romaker, Madison, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, 1 p.m., at Liberty Center United Methodist Church, the Reverend Thomas Hanover officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the church or to the H.B. Romaker Scholarship Fund of Liberty Center Schools.
Gunderson Funeral Home, Madison, Wisconsin, will handle crematory arrangements, and local arrangements are being handled by Croll-Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center.
