Howard W. Rogge, 83, 515 Parkview Ave., Bryan, died Friday evening at Community Hospitals of Williams County where he had been a patient for six weeks.
He was born in Liberty Center on April 27, 1904. His first wife. Hazel, preceded him in death in 1977. He married Polly Smith in 1979, and she survives.
A principal and superintendent in Swanton, he came to Bryan in 1943 as principal of Bryan High School.
In 1946 he became superintendent of Bryan Schools and held the position until his retirement in 1969. He was instrumental in passing the bond issues to build additions to Lincoln Elementary, Washington Elementary and Bryan High School, as well as constructing a school parking lot and bus bams. Known throughout the state as an educator, he was a member of many professional organizations on the state and national level. He was an advisor to Williams County Retired Teacher Association and an alumnus of Ohio State University. In 1983 he received the Good Citizen Award from Bryan Area Foundation. He was a member of Knights Templar and Orchard Hills Country Club, both of Bryan.
Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Becky Burns of Columbus; one son, William of Toledo; one stepson, Keith Smith of Lafayette, Ind.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, Bryan, Rev. Fred McComb and Rev. Edward Auchard officiating. Interment will be at the Young Cemetery, Liberty Center.
