R. D. Rigal, Sr., a life-long resident of Liberty Center, died at his home here at 9:00 o’clock Wednesday evening.
He had been helpless for the past seven weeks, having suffered a stroke of paralysis, but was patient and kind all through his illness. Untiring efforts were administered for his recovery and many were the prayers given, but God knew best and took him to that home on high for he had been converted during his illness and was ready to meet his Maker.
He was the son of Joseph and Kathryn Rigal and was born on the old homestead 2 1/2 miles west of here May 1, 1868 and departed this life at the age of 62 years.
He was in the saw mill business here for 35 years, but at the time of his illness [several words missing] was employed as an engineer by the Liberty Center Grain & Stock Co.
He had been chief of the Liberty Center volunteer fire department since its organization 40 years ago and enjoyed being its drill master. He was also drill master of the I. O. O. F. Lodge and on different occasions drilled the Liberty Ladies’ Band.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura Rigal; his brother, Samuel Rigal and his beloved children, dearer to him than life, a son, R. D., and a daughter, Betty.
The pall bearers, who were chosen from the fire department were dressed in their rubber coats and hats and were, Wm. Edgar, Chas. Graner, Wm. Fry, Floyd Crum, Myron Hepner and Tom Bichan. The fire engine which he loved so well was used as an escort to the cemetery. The I. O. O. F. Lodge marched in a body.
