Louis R. Penny, 89, died May 4 in Holland, Mich, and interment was May 8 in Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center.
He was born Dec. 20, 1908 in Cambridge, the son of Elbert and Mary (Maffett) Penny. He married Fern Sharpe in 1949 and she died in 1987.
Mr. Penny moved to Southgate, Mich, in 1930 and worked at the Great Lakes Steel Corp. until his retirement in 1972. He served as an anti-tank gunner with the 30th infantry during World War II and received a purple heart during action in Italy.
Surviving are a son, Dan, of Zeeland, Mich.; grandsons, Lewis and Nathan: a stepdaughter, Mrs. Duane (Colleen) Fosnaught, of East Berlin, Penn.; a step-daughter-in-law, Sharon Spencer, of Toledo; a sister, Isabelle Poizell, of Canton; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Glen (Marge Sharpe) Fynewever, of Holland, Mich.; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by step-son Bill Spencer; brothers, Paul and Harry; and sisters, Ruth, Mary Jane, Esther, and Dorothy.
The Liberty Center VFW Post and American Legion conducted military graveside services and Bill Sharpe, Sr., of Liberty Center, presided at the service.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Liberty Center Historical Society.
