Child Killed and Mother Seriously Injured When Struck by Wabash Freight Train
An accident occurred at the High street crossing of the Wabash in this place Thursday evening in which Gladys, the three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pennell was killed and her mother dangerously injured.
Mrs. Pennell and her two little daughters, Gladys and Agnes, were on the way to the show grounds and were walking down the track. As they neared the crossing, the children were walking ahead when Mrs. Pennell heard the approaching train and hurried forward to take the children out of danger, and all three were struck by the train and hurled from the track. he victims were carried to the, home of James Gruber near the crossing and Dr. Haag was called to attend them. Little Gladys was terribly crushed and mangled and lived only twenty minutes after the accident. Mrs., Pennell’s injuries consisted of srious bruises jand contusions about the head and face, and it was thought for a time that she was injured internally. She was taken to her home east of town later in the evening and is now slowly recovering from her terrible experience. The oldest child, Agnes, escaped with minor injuries.
The body of little Gladys was taken to Anderson’s undertaking rooms and prepared for burial and then taken home. The funeral was held at Reformed church Saturday, interment in Young’s cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Pennell have the sympathy of the community in their terrible bereavement.
