Thomas Arthur Mitchell, Sr. March 2, 1922 - June 14, 1997
Thomas Mitchell Sr., 75, of Liberty Center died Saturday at Northcrest Nursing Home of Napoleon.
Born March 2, 1922, in Milbank, S.D., he was the son of Leroy and Alice (Harwood) Mitchell. On May 7, 1949, he married Shirley 'Cork' Hersh, who survives.
He was a territory manager for Allis-Chalmers for six years until 1960, when he became owner and operator of Mitchell Farm Equipment of Liberty Center. He was a member of the International Harvester Battalion of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Grand Rapids, where he was a lector, usher and served a term on the parish council. He was a member of the Henry County Historical Society and the National Cream Separator Collectors Association, of which he was a founding member. He had served on the board of Public Affairs in Liberty Center and was one of the original board members of the Liberty Center Community Action Group.
He is also survived by two daughters, Patricia Buckenmeyer of Whitehouse and Barbara Mitchell of Liberty Center; two sons, Michael and Tom Jr., both of Liberty Center; two sisters, Sister Eucharista Marie of Louisiana and Mary Richardson of Medford, Ore.; six brothers, Mel, John, Francis, Robert, Martin and Joseph, all of Michigan; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Mitchell.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Grand Rapids, Father Joseph O'Brien officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery of Liberty Center, where military, services will be conducted by the Liberty Center American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Wright Funeral Home of Liberty Center.
