John ‘King’ Kingsley Mires May 2, 1918 - April 5, 2002
John ‘King’ Kingsley Mires, 83, of Liberty Center died Friday night at Harborside Health Care, Swanton.
Born May 2, 1918, in Liberty Center, he was the son of John and Emma (Crozier) Mires. On June 15, 1942, he married Rita Miller, who survives.
He was a graduate of Ohio State University where he received his master's degree. He was the editor and publisher of the Liberty Press. He had also worked for the Toledo Times and later for the Toledo Blade. He was the editor of the Toledo Record during the newspaper strike from November 1966 to March 1967. He taught journalism and economics at Bowling Green State University (Eva Marie Saint was one of his students). He purchased Paryski's Publishing Co. in Toledo and operated it until 1969. He then did freelance work after that.
He was a lieutenant during World War II with the Army Air Corps. He was a boxer and a Golden Gloves champion. He was a member of Liberty Center United Methodist Church where he taught high school Sunday school and ladies classes, member of the Liberty Center Rotary Club, past president of the Liberty Center Library Board, Gilbert-Baughman Post #492 American Legion, V.F.W. Post #6596, charter member of the Henry County Sportsman Club, "Men of Liberty" barbershop chorus and Irish Setters Association of Ohio.
He is also survived by a daughter, Karen Inks of Swanton; a son, Craig of Lima; a sister, Louisa Strock of Liberty Center; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center, Pastor David MacDonald officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center, where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Liberty Center Public Library.
