Eugene Pratt Mires, son of James and Hannah Mires, was born in Franklin county, O., Feb. 28, 1870, and departed this life Oct. 13, 1950, at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 16 days.
Mr. Mires came to Henry county at the age of two years with his parents and resided here the rest of his life. He was raised on a farm and was one of the first graduates of the Liberty Center high school, in 1884.
He taught for several years and became the first rural mail carrier out of the Liberty Center post office. He became a postal mail clerk of the railway system between Toledo and St. Louis and continued for a number of years in this work. He transferred back to rural mail carrier, which work he was engaged in at the time of his retirement.
He married Bertha Yarnell on Oct. 21, 1899. No children were born of this union, and she passed away in 1912.
In 1913 he was united in marriage with Leona Conley, and to this union were born four children: two daughters, Gertrude and Marjorie; and two sons, Wilson and Phillip.
Mr. Mires first suffered a stroke about eight years ago but for eighteen months or two years his condition had been grave. Thursday of the past week he took a sudden change for the worse and passed away Friday night at 11 o’clock.
He was a member of the Reformed church and also a member of the order of Free and Accepted Masons.
He is survived by the companion who served him faithfully during his long illness, the children, Mrs. Denver Spiess, of Archbold; Mrs. Bernard Overmier, Liberty Center, and two sons, Wilson, of Springfield, O., and Phillip, at home; three grandsons, one brother, John S. Mires, and other relatives and friends.
Services were conducted from the Walter funeral home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. David L. Eichar, pastor of the Methodist church and the local Masonic lodge.
