Helen, fourth daughter of Ward and Fidelia Woodward, was born near Liberty Center, Jan. 1, 1852, and departed this life April 28, 1940, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 28 days.
She was united in marriage to Albert G. Matthews, also of Liberty Center, in 1871, here in Liberty Center. To this union was born one son, Guy Elton.
All of her life was spent in and around Liberty Center, where in 1896 she helped organize and became associate matron of the local Eastern Star chapter, of which she was a member until her demise. She served as treasurer for twelve years and recently was made honorary treasurer. In 1936 the local chapter conferred on her life membership.
She was a member of the local W. C. T. U. and of the Reformed Sunday school and Aid society, which organization she served a number of years as president. She was lovingly known to all in the Reformed group as Aunt Helen.
She enjoyed unusually good health for one of her years until she fell two weeks before her death and suffered a broken leg, from which injury she never recovered.
She leaves to mourn her passing a son, Guy, two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Dunivan, of Liberty Center, and Mrs. Samantha Brown of Napoleon, and a host of other relatives and friends, her husband having preceded her in death many years previous.
