A 14-year-old Liberty Center girl who struck her head on a log while in swimming Tuesday afternoon at the Twin Acres Camp Ground near Whitehouse died Wednesday morning in St. Luke’s Hospital, Maumee.
Dr. Harry Mignerey, Lucas County coroner, withheld a ruling on the death of Debra Leininger pending an autopsy.
Sheriff’s deputies were told by the girl’s father, Dale Leininger that his daughter had been hanging onto the log, dove beneath the surface, hit her head when she came up, and sank.
The girl was pulled from the water about eight minutes later, deputies said, and was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Debra was a student at Liberty Center High School. She was a member cf the United Methodist Church, Cadette Girl Scout Troop No. 955, and the Busy Bee 4-H Club.
Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Leininger; brothers Danny and Douglas; sisters. Di-Anna, Dawn, and Diane, and grandparents, Earl M. Leininger and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Travis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Walker Mortuary, Napoleon, where the body will be after 7 p.m. Thursday.
