LIBERTY CENTER - E. Clyde Slee, a former township clerk who farmed north of Liberty Center, died yesterday at Medical College of Ohio Hospital.
He was 79 and had suffered from emphysema for 12 years.
Mr. Slee, who was raised in Maumee and Liberty Center, joined the army soon after graduating from Liberty Center High School.
He was the third of six children and times were tough, but he felt a patriotic duty, said his daughter, Ellen Frank.
During World War II, he served in the South Pacific with the 148th Infantry Regiment of the 37th Division, said his brother, Keith Slee. Three of the Slee brothers were in the war at the same time, and all returned home.
Clyde Slee, who went by his middle name because an uncle also was named Eugene, won three bronze stars, his daughter said.
One was for heroics during the fight for a cave held by Japanese soldiers, she remembered.
He caught malaria during the war and had recurrences for years after he returned to northwest Ohio. He married Eleanor Sharp, whom he had known while in high school.
Mr. Slee believed in an early to bed, early to rise routine, and worked hard, his daughter said.
He was an inspector at McCulley Egg Co. in Liberty Center more than 20 years and kept poultry at home, wholesaling Muscovy ducks and capons.
He raised two to three acres of gladiolus that he wholesaled to florists, as well as field crops on his farm of about 40 acres.
Later he was a safety inspector for the Ohio Department of Transportation office in Bowling Green.
A Democrat, he was the Washington Township clerk in Henry County from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he and his wife traveled to Australia, Spain, and New Zealand. Mrs. Slee died in 1986.
A granddaughter, Erin Slee, recalled that he taught her to make chocolate chip cookies when she was just 5.
Surviving are his daughters, Ann Schlenk and Ellen Frank; sons, Scott and Neal Slee; brother, Keith Slee; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
The family requests any tributes be to the Colton United Methodist Church, Colton, O., the Liberty Center Fire and Rescue Squad, or the American Lung Association.
