Vernam L. Leatherman April 17, 1912 - Dec. 19, 1996
Vernam Leatherman, 84, of Liberty Center died Thursday at the Fulton County Health Center of Wauseon.
Born April 17, 1912, in Liberty Center, he was the son of William and Grace (Mohler) Leatherman. On Aug. 11, 1946, he married Ruth Grossman, who survives.
He was a teacher in a one-room school in Hamler, then taught at Neapolis, Liberty Center and for 20 years at Fassett Junior High in Oregon, retiring in 1972. He was a World War II Army veteran and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Liberty Center United Methodist Church, member and past president of Liberty Center Rotary Club, member of the Liberty Center American Legion, a 50-year member of the Liberty Center Masonic Lodge and a member of the Ohio and National Education Association.
He is also survived by a daughter, Jeanne Stilwell of Valparaiso, Ind.; two brothers, Earl of Naples, Fla., and Elmer of Napoleon; two sisters, Alice Wheeler of Ramona, Calif., and Faye Austermiller of Napoleon; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar 'Peter', Dale and Lowell; and a sister, Josephine Leatherman.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Liberty Center United Methodist Church, Rev. Martin Denes officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery of Liberty Center, where the Liberty Center American Legion will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Wright Funeral Home of Liberty Center, where a Masonic service will be held Sunday at 7:30.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the church, Liberty Center Rescue Squad or to the Heart Association.
