Ruth E. Leatherman, 94, of Liberty Center, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the Lutheran Home in Napoleon, Ohio.
Ruth was born March 12, 1916, in Continental, Ohio. She was the daughter of Edward and Claudia (Mardock) Grossman. On Aug 10, 1946, she married Vern Leatherman, who passed away Dec 19, 1996. She was a graduate of Continental High School and Bowling Green State University. At the age of 18, Ruth started her teaching career in a one room country school in Palmer Township. A few years later she accepted the offer of first grade in Columbus Grove, Ohio. Then several years later in Van Wert City School, then into the March Foundation in Van Wert (a home and school for underprivileged children of northwest Ohio). In 1957, she started the first kindergarten in Liberty Center, retiring after 36 years in education to pursue her hobby of oil painting.
She was a member of the Liberty Center Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Historical Society, Garden Club member, Henry County Retired Teachers, Henry County Arts Council, former Eastern Star member and Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (David) Stilwell, grandson Christopher(Jennifer) Stilwell, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Ruth in death were her husband, father; mother, brother Merle; sister Vera, and granddaughter Laura Stilwell.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, from 2-8 p.m. in the Wright-Habegger Funeral Home, 302 E. Maple St., Liberty Center, Ohio 43532. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. in the Liberty Center United Methodist Church, 307 East St., Liberty Center, Ohio, on Saturday, Dec. 18. Burial will follow at Youngs Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be gifted to the Liberty Center Library, Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, Liberty Center E.M.S., or to the Henry County Hospice.
