LIBERTY CENTER - Former Mayor George J. Johnson, 82, died Wednesday at Northcrest Nursing Home, Napoleon.
He was mayor from Jan 1, 1962, to Dec. 31, 1967, and from Jan. 5, 1988, to Dec. 20, 1994.
Born Sept. 15, 1917, in Liberty Center, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Creager) Johnson. On Sept. 1, 1940, he married Virginia Teeters, who preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 1994.
He was a road grader-operating engineer and worked for Fred Creager of Liberty Center, Fred Gerken of Napoleon and Miller Brothers Construction of Archbold before retiring in 1982.
Johnson was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of various local organizations.
He is survived by two daughters, a son, a brother, two sisters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wright Funeral Home of Liberty Center, Rev. Martin Denes officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by joint veterans posts.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
