George Judd Johnson Sept. 15, 1917 - March 29, 2000
George Johnson, 82, of Liberty Center, died Wednesday at Northcrest Nursing Home of Napoleon.
Born Sept. 15, 1917, in Liberty Center, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Creager) Johnson. On Sept. 1, 1940, he married Virginia Teeters, who preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 1994.
He was a road grader-operating engineer and worked for Fred Creager of Liberty Center, and Fred Gerken of Napoleon and Miller Brothers Construction of Archbold before retiring in 1983. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II and also served several terms as mayor of Liberty Center. He was a member of Liberty Center United Methodist Church, Liberty Center Lodge #518 F&AM, Henry County AARP, Liberty Center Volunteer Fire Department, Henry County Senior Center and its board of directors, V.F.W. Post #6596 of Liberty Center, Gilbert-Baughman American Legion Post #492 of Liberty Center and AMVETS Post #1313 of Napoleon.
He is survived by two daughters, Diane Whitmire of Bowling Green and Debra Glanz of Liberty Center; a son Doug of Bryan; a brother, Paul of Bella Vista, Ark.; two sisters, Debra Cook of Waldron, Mich., and Joyce Williams of New York; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Thompson and Julia Marquis; two brothers, Harry and Lawrence; and a grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wright Funeral Home of Liberty Center, Rev. Martin Denes officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery of Liberty Center, were military honors will be accorded by joint veterans posts.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Northcrest Nursing Home, Liberty Center United Methodist Church, Liberty Center Volunteer Fire Department, American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
