Steam Engine Enthusiast Founded National Threshers Association
Earnest J. Hoffer, 71, steam engine enthusiast president and founder of the National Threshers Association, died Friday in his home at 444 Starr Ave.
He founded the threshers group in 1945. Each year for several years the association held steam thresher competitions and displays at Alvordton, O., moving to the Fulton County Fairgrounds near Wauseon, about 15 years ago. Mr. Hoffer build two steam threshers which he entered last June in the events.
He was also a founder and past president of the Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway, which operates the Bluebird Special local excursion railroad. He also built a 27-foot steam powered launch which he used on Lake Erie.
He was employed by National Biscuit Co. for 35 years, retiring as maintenance superintendent in 1970.
Surviving are his wife, IIva; sons, Calvin, Philip, and Dennis; daughters, Mrs. Joann Dannibale and Mrs. Marjorie Piwowar; brother, James; and sisters, Mrs. Mildren Williamson, Mrs. Dorothy Fields, Mrs. Josephine Stevenson, and Mrs. Kathryn Eddy.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Clegg Mortuary, with burial in Young Cemetery, Liberty Center, O.
The family suggests that tributes may be in the form of contributions to the American Heart Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
