Lorenz F. Elling, 92, of Swanton died Wednesday at Swanton Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 9, 1914, in Freedom Township, he was the son of Harmon and Helen (Gerken) Elling. On April 27, 1935, he married Irene Opal Kinder, who preceded him in death Jan. 1, 1997.
A life-long farmer, he later turned his hobby of repairing corn planters into a business and was known to many as the "planter man." He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Liberty Center, where he had served on the building committee.
He is survived by a son, Robert (Judy) of Swanton; three daughters, Opal (Neal) Sturdavant of Napoleon, Rosella (Jerry) Hannewald of Waterville and Glenna Mae (Ken) Helmke of Okolona; a brother, Richard (Judy) of Paducah, Ky.; two sisters, Hildegarde Sindel of Toledo and Leona (Arnold) Ehlers of Defiance; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Iretha Sleesman; three brothers, Martin, Freddie and Eldor; and a grandchild.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pastor Jeffrey Stone officiating. Interment will follow at Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.
