J. Gordon Butts, 87, of Liberty Center died Thursday at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.
Born Oct. 9, 1917, in Ashville, N.Y., he was the son of Glenn Floyd and Florence (Sweet) Butts. On March 15, 1942, he married Mildred Marie Davis, who preceded him in death April 25, 2002.
A staff sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II, he spent two-and-a-half years in New Zealand. He was assistant treasurer for Washington Gas Light Co., Washington, D.C., for more than 30 years. He retired in the early 1970s. He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church of Defiance and Naples, Fla., and Liberty Center Rotary Club.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Marie Davis of Longmont, Colo.; a son, Alan Michael (Joanna) of McCoy, Colo.; a brother, Stanley (Lydia) of Andover, N.Y.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd; and two sisters, Esther Hosier and Myrtle Butts.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center, Pastor Terry Spiess officiating. Interment will be at Youngs Cemetery, Liberty Center, with military services conducted by V.F. W. Post #6596 and Gilbert-Baughman American Legion Post #492, both of Liberty Center.
