Mary Sworden Burgoon, daughter of George arid Susan Sworden, was born in Freedom township, Henry county, near Napoleon, O., on Feb. 18, 1876. She was one of a family of six girls and two boys.
Her parents, one sister, Mrs. Olive Lee, one brother, Everett Sworden, and a granddaughter, Ganell Fredrick, having preceded her in death.
She was reared to young womanhood in the same community in which she was born.
She was united in marriage to Martin L. Burgoon of Hoytville, Wood county, O., on Dec. 20, 1895. To this union were born two daughters and two sons, all of whom survive her, she being the first one to be removed from the immediate circle.
During the first ten years of their married life their place of residence was changed several times until in 1905 they established their home in Liberty Center, where they have resided to the present time.
Mrs. Burgoon was an unusually active individual and exceptionally devoted to her family, her neighbors' sorrows and disappointments were hers as well; toiling and struggling for others to her own detriment.
Her children rise up and call her “blessed” and rightfully too; she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Burgoon departed this life very unexpectedly on the evening of Jan. 31, 1939, having attained the age of 62 years, 11 months and 13 days. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Martin L. Burgoon; her children, Ivan Burgoon, Zelma Fredrick, Helen Fredrick and Harold Burgoon, all of Liberty Center, O.; five grandchildren, Marilyn and Shirley Jean Burgoon; Carolyn Jean Fredrick, Mary Lou and Donald Ray Burgoon; four sisters and one brother, Mrs. Elma Yarnell, Mrs. William Frysinger and Charles Sworden, of Napoleon; Mrs. Jennie Teatsorth, of North Baltimore, and Mrs. Earl Wright of Liberty Center; also a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
