SAMUEL BURDETTE BEAVERS, 1919-1999
Carpenter served in war, as fireman
LIBERTY CENTER — Samuel Burdette Beavers, a carpenter who had volunteered for 50 years with the Liberty Center-Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, died Thursday in his home here.
He was 80 and had been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his cheek about six months ago, his wife, Thelma, said. The tumor blinded him.
Mr. Beavers, who had gone by his middle name, Burdette, as a child, followed his grandfather into carpentry.
He had worked on The Andersons, Inc., river grain elevators and the Owens-Illinois, Inc., building in downtown Toledo; Flower Hospital in Sylvania, and the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant near Oak Harbor.
“He liked to pound nails,” his wife said. He retired 18 years ago.
He had been assigned to construction work when he was in the U. S. Army during World War II for three years, first working in California and then in the Pacific. He completed the eighth grade at Liberty Center High School.
Mr. Beavers retired from the fire department last year. For several years he had driven trucks more than he had fought fires, but he continued to attend meetings and respond to calls, his wife said.
He was the grand marshal of the 125th Northwestern Ohio Volunteer Firemen’s Association convention parade in Liberty Center this year.
He liked fire trucks and kept toy fire trucks for his grandchildren, his daughter Gloria Gilders said.
Mr. Beavers and his wife enjoyed camping; traveling to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Term.; to see friends in St. Louis, and as far as Florida when they were younger. Recently their favorite spot was Harrison Lake State Park near Fayette. He liked to play cards and enjoyed “sitting around the bonfire shooting the breeze,” his wife said.
He tended a vegetable garden and built shelves and cabinets for his home in a shop in his garage.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma; daughters, Kaye Irving, Gloria Gilders, Sue Beman, and Gina O’Neill; sister, Dorothy Young; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is after 7 p.m. today and after 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Wright Funeral Home in Liberty Center where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday.
The family suggests tributes to Henry County Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
