Elementary teacher at Swanton 33 years was voted 'most just'
LYONS, Ohio - Beth Ann Andrews, an elementary teacher in the Swanton Local School District for 33 years who had a keen interest in history, died Wednesday in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.
She was 57 and was injured six days earlier in a two-vehicle crash at Airport Highway and York Township Road 10 in Fulton County.
Mrs. Andrews of northern-Fulton County's Chesterfield Township retired in 2006 from the Swanton schools, where she was hired right after graduation from Ohio Northern University.
In her career, she taught most subjects and in all the district's elementary buildings, but she was at Park Elementary School longest. She enjoyed teaching English and history the most.
"She loved history. She loved primarily American history and Egyptian history and anything on the Titanic," her husband, Tim, said. "The [U.S.) Civil War was always a very interesting thing to her."
The thought that she was benefiting the children sustained her.
"She just absolutely adored them," her husband said. "We were unable to have children of our own, so [teaching) was a natural outgrowth."
She noticed the children who needed a little extra attention and gave it. But she was hardly a pushover.
"If someone expects a lot from a child and gives a little encouragement, [the child) has a tendency to try a lot harder," her husband said. "She was no-nonsense. It didn't matter who the [children were), she took them individually and expected individual success from each."
Students once voted her "Most Just Teacher," her husband said.
"It tickled her. She said, 'Yeah, well, I try. If the children will come my way, I'll try to go as far as I can for them,'" he recalled.
Mrs. Andrews was an elder in First Christian Church, Wauseon. One responsibility was to visit people who were homebound.
“She had strong values - justice, mercy, and moderation," her husband said. "She was very godly."
She and her husband liked to take cruises, and they had visited Alaska and Hawaii; gone through the Panama Canal, and traveled up the East Coast, around Nova Scotia, and up the St. Lawrence River to Montreal. She was eager to visit the Mediterranean because of the history involved.
She was a graduate of Liberty Center High School in Henry County. She worked her way through college by detasseling corn and running a machine at the Campbell Soup Co. that filled cans with V8 juice.
Surviving are her husband, Tim, whom she married Aug. 18, 1978; parents, L. Lyle and Hilda Spiess, and sister, Connie Cahill.
There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today in First Christian Church, Wauseon. Arrangements are by the Barnes Funeral Chapel, Delta, Ohio.
The family suggests tributes to the church or to Assistance Dogs of America in Swanton.
