Casper Zierolf was born in 1811 in Bavaria. Anna Bvoden was born in 1812, also in Bavaria. They received their education there and when young adults, immigrated to America. They met in Boston and were married.
After their parents came to America they moved to Medina County, Ohio. They lived there five years and on May 5, 1852, Casper and Anna Zierolf brought their family to Henry County to live.
He bought 80 acres of land on the Ridge in Marion Township for $500. He built a log house and cleared the land for farming.
Four of their six children were born in Boston: Casper Jr., William, Elizabeth, and James. Mary and Peter were born in Medina County. William and James stayed in Henry County but the other children later moved to Benton County, Oregon, to establish homes.
The family was Catholic and attended church in a log church on the present site of Sacred Heart. Casper Zierolf died in 1880, and his wife in 1888.
James Zierolf became a harness maker. He married Mary Jane Young and they were the parents of three sons, Edward, Otto, and Ozville. The father died when the children were small and Mary Jane later married Samuel Enck and moved to Custar.
Oxville (Ozzie) Zierolf married Amelia Ritz on Jan. 19, 1896, in Sacred Heart Church by Father Harks. She was the daughter of John and Johanna (Meyer) Ritz. She was a seamstress and made many of her own patterns.
They first lived on a farm, then in Hamler where he worked as a dray- man. They were the parents of five children: Urban and Mildred attended Defiance College. Urban taught in
Marion Township until called for service in World War I. He died as a young man.
Mildred taught in Hamler and other schools for many years.
Pauline died of polio at the age of five. Arletus remained at home until her death in 1972. Charles still lives on the farm.
In 1913, the Zierolfs moved to a farm south of Hamler and he was a field- man for the Continental Sugar Beet Co. until his death.
Son Charles married Agatha Jackman in 1941. They are the parents of four daughters and two sons: Robert, Mary, Donald, Susan, Anne, and Eileen.
Robert married Lindsay Friel of Zanesville. He spent three years with the Army band at West Point and now teaches music at the University of Cincinnati.
Donald married Bonita Warnimont of Miller City. He is a science teacher and registered athletic trainer at Whitmer High School, Toledo. They have a son, Michael, and daughter, Amy.
Mary is a registered nurse anesthetist in the Cincinnati area hospitals.
Susan married Dan V. Smith who farms in the Holgate area. She is an x- ray technician in Heller Memorial Hospital, Napoleon, and they have one daughter, Jennifer.
Anne married William J. Schroeder who farms in Putnam County. She is a secretary at Marathon Oil Co., Findlay, and they have one son, Benjamin.
Eileen is also a registered x-ray technician working at Motts Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
