Calvin C. Young
Had it not been for the energetic, untiring efforts of Mr. Young, it is quite possible and even probable that the town of Liberty Center would never have been established. It was due to him, more than any other person, that this point was made a railroad station. He built the first depot at his own expense and for many years permitted the railroad company to use this building free of rental charge. He was the first railroad agent at this place and learned telegraphy of Mr. John Russell, a brother of Henry and Millard Russell, all deceased. He held the position of agent and operator for twenty years. Mr. John T. West, Sr., also deceased, helped Mr. Young in making the grade for the first sidetrack of the Wabash at Liberty Center. Mr. West though nearly 81 years of age, was present at the funeral and served as one of the pallbearers for Mr. Young.
In the pioneer days Mr. Young was engaged in the mercantile business for two years, served for sometime as postmaster and in the early sixties was appointed Notary Public, holding the commission until his death.
Mr. Young was an enthusiastic and devoted Mason and never missed a meeting of his beloved order when it was at all possible for him to be present. So faithful was he that in the early days before Liberty had a lodge it was nothing unusual for him to walk to Napoleon to attend the lodge meetings. He was one of the oldest Masons in Henry Co. having been made an entered apprentice at Napoleon Lodge No. 256 of Free and Accepted Masons, Sept. 2, 1862, and passed to the degree of Fellow Craft on March 31, 1863. He was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason June 2, 1863. He remained a member of the Napoleon Lodge until Oct. 18, 1877, at which time Liberty Center Lodge No: 518 was instituted with Mr. Young as one of the 17 charter members. He served as treasurer of the Lodge for nearly 30 years.
The story of Mr. Young was taken from the memorial written for him at the time of his death. It was submitted by a granddaughter Lucy Showman Johnson.
