The first member of the Veigel family to come to Henry County, Ohio, was Christian Veigel. Christian was born on November 3, 1821 and died on May 27, 1890. He was born in Grossingersheim, Wurtemberg, Germany. In 1852, he came to the United States and settled in Section 14 of Napoleon Township on forty acres of land just west of the present location of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He married Christiana Gogel Waisner, a widow, in August, 1857. Christiana was born October 31, 1825 in Freudenstadt, Wurtemberg, Gemany, and died on December 12, 1893. She was a widow with three children by her first marriage. They were Barbara Waisner, who married James Shasteen; Matt Waisner who married Minerva Brubaker; and Lil Waisner who married Tom Guitteau.
In 1863, Christian and Christiana purchased eighty acres in Section 10 of Napoleon Township where they spent the rest of their lives. This farm is still in the family and is owned by Thomas Veigel.
The Veigels were active in community affairs and active members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Napoleon where many of the descendants are members.
The children of Christian and Christiana Veigel were: Christian married George Krauss. May married William Grolle. John Veigel. Jacob Frederick Veigel married Ida Schumacher.
Jacob Frederick Veigel was born on February 12, 1867 and died May 22, 1946. He married Ida Schumacher who was born on January 23, 1869 and died on August 30, 1959. They were married on February 24, 1892. Ida was the daughter of William Schumacher, born December 21, 1837 to Joachim and Sophia Schumacher, in Prussia. Joachim and Sophia came from Prussia to Henry County in 1854. William Schumacher died in July, 1909.
William Schumacher married Katharina Krauss who was born on April 4, 1848 and died on January 6, 1933, on October 8, 1867. Katharina was born in Fulton County to Frederick Krauss, who came from Bavaria, Germany, and married Katharina Leininger, who was born on March 18, 1818, died on October 27, 1890, in 1841.
Katharina was a member of a pioneer Fulton County, Ohio, family that came from Alsace-Lorraine to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1837. Her parents were Johan Jacob Leininger, who was born on February 17, 1787, died September 3, 1861, and his wife, A. Margaretha Schulz, born February 27, 1785, died July 21, 1852, and their five sons and two daughters who came to Fulton County in 1842 and started the Leininger settlement in Section 26 of German Township. In 1846, they organized St. James Lutheran Church still referred to as the Leininger Congregation.
J. Fred Veigel and his wife, Ida, after their marriage in 1892, made their home on the Veigel farm in Napoleon Township where their five children were born.
J. Fred became known as a good farmer and livestock man and for many years maintained a herd of jersey cattle. Because of his reputation for honesty and good judgment, his advice was sought after by his friends and neighbors in the making of wills and other serious matters. Over the years his reputation for honesty and high ethical standards brought about the use of the title "Honest Fred" in the community and the local newspapers referred to him in that way. He had a long record of public service, first as township trustee, county tax assessor, county commissioner from 1914 until 1918, then serving two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1921 until 1925. As one of the first Republicans to be elected to public office from a strongly Democratic county, he deserved much credit in changing a predominantly democratic county to a predominantly Republican county during his years in public office, and as chairman of the Republican Party. After his death in 1946, the Ohio House of Representatives adopted Resolution 128, which recognized him for his long career of honorable public service.
